"Rockets opponents are making just 41.8 % of their shots, second only to Indiana in the league."

The problem is defensive rebounding and giving teams second and third chance opportunities and turnovers. Also whats our 3pt defense % which I would think would not be good.

Saw it in this Feigen article:

    http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterockets/2013/11/rockets-defense-getting-stops-not-enough-rebounds/

Verified it by checking the stat myself:

    http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/team/_/stat/defense-per-game/sort/fieldGoalPctOpponent

Opponents points per shot: 4th with 1.13 Only Indiana, San Antonio, and Chicago ahead.

Opponents adjusted field goal percentage: 5th with 46.7%

Opponents points per possession: 14th. Due to giving up offensive rebounds.

Yea its interesting we're #2 in fg% allowed.

Were mid pack in 3point fg% but give up 2nd highest 3pointers against per game.

So almost all defensive stats... Rockets are within the top 5.

Except for opponents' points per possession. Most likely due to failing to get rebounds due to players running the floor and not securing the rebound first.

You know who is leading the league in defensive rebounding and is probably available via trade?

    Kevin Garnett

Have you seen Hardens incompetent defending on the corner threes?. This goes pretty much for all our perimeter defenders.

But that isn't a bad thing. Rockets are 5th in adjusted field goal percentage.

That takes into account the fact that 3 pointers are worth more points per shot.

So even though they give up more 3's, they still have the 5th best defense in the league based on adjusted field goal percentage.

The Rockets current have the 7th best PPP defense of any NBA team. The answer lies elsewhere.

The fast pace system is the reason why we give up so many points.

Look up how many points per possession allowed that this team averages.

But they have the 4th best points per shot rate of any NBA team.

So the answer is that they are giving up too many offensive rebounds to their opponents, which give them more shots per possession.

So the Rockets' problem isn't defense. It's rebounding.

Guys, check this stat out: Points per shot differential.

The Rockets are head and shoulders better than any other team in the NBA. Check it out:

    1. Houston +0.29
    2. Indiana +0.20
    3. Miami +0.16
    San Antonio+0.16
    5. OKC +0.10
    Golden State+0.10
    7. Portland +0.07
    8. Clippers +0.06
    Atlanta +0.06

    It's not even close.

Not really. TO and defensive rebounds are. fast pace is why we score so much. if we fix defensive rebounds and TOs, we won't give up that many points

    Defensive rebounding is defense.

I don't know where Feigen got his number, but basketball-reference.com shows we're 21st in points allowed per possession. If you want to know what goes into that, there are 4 factors: field goal defense (5th), defensive rebounding (27th), ability to force turnovers (30th), and ability to keep teams from hurting you at the free throw line (9th).

The funny thing is this team is still trying to figure out lineups, find some chemistry, and get past injuries. Yet they stand at 9 - 5, have been playing really well lately, even with that debacle in Dallas, and have beaten some pretty decent teams, mostly Western Conference teams. Not to mention, having one of your players demand a trade and refuse to play.

I see rebounding as a completely different from defense.

Rebounding is its own separate skill.

We have a winner. Garnett brings all the mean and the intangibles lacking in this team.

To look at it another way, Dwight is being pulled out of position to contest shots allowed by perimeter penetration, and help defenders are looking at the ball or leaking out on the break instead of coming up to box out Dwight's man when the shot goes up. That's bad help D and its entirely separate from rebounding skill.
