I just wonder if the new head coach is required to keep the current assistants? Maybe that is one of the hold-ups right now? Are our assistants under long term contracts which we have to pay if we let them go?

On the other hand, does JVG (or MD) have a group of people he worked with that he wants to bring in? What kind of budget is he allowed? If they are used to the NY's pay scale , that would probably runs higher?!

No, Van Gundy can choose to keep whomever or he can get rid of whomever :D

No previous Assistant[trainee] Coach should be here next season. Especially Larry Smith. If they are, they should be in the tape room!IMHO

He doesn't have much of that staff left.
Boylin has gone to Golden State and I've heard Wells is on headed to the college ranks as an associate head coach for Purdue,I think.

Mario Elie would be huge. Someone to light a fire under the asses of our guys. Avery Johnson would be a good fit for our gaurds.

    My lineup would be:

    Jeff Van Gundy
    Mario Elie - assistant
    Avery Johnson - assistant
Moses Malone - big man coach
Keith "big pimpin'" Jones - trainer

We should make changes to assistant coaches, it' obvious they're not really competent.

Hopefully, the assistants JVG brings in are more competent.

    Drewdog,

That would never happen. We couldn't afford suc ha staff, and there are too many control freaks in that staff to work together.

From what I read, Van Gundy wanted to take all his old NY staff wherever he went.

I know it would be cool and all to bring in past players, but there are competent assistants out there who weren't Rockets at one point or another. Still, Mario Elie would be cool to have on the bench.

Does anybody know who Van Gundy's assistants were in NY? I would love to get Avery, but it's Jeff's show.

i dont think u have any right to say that. Do u know them or have worked w/ them, or even heard this from someone? U can say your opinion is that they are not good, but to say they are not competent, that is major bs

I don't mean to offend anyone.

Actually I would say I don't know much about every assistants personally. It's clear from the result, that's all us fans can see anyway, unless you know something about the assistants that most of us don't know about, by all means, please share it.

There's some boneheaded decisions making when Rudy out to treat his cancer on the court by the replacement that costs us some games & a playoff spots, and Yao's ROY. How is it competent if some of them can get such simple decision wrong? Why would you take your best guys out when there's still clearly tons of time and a great chance to win that game? Why would you keep your best players on the bench while throwing the towels in so early and your best players are clearly wanted to play so badly?

It's kind of funny how you guys are wanting to hire ex-Rockets with no coaching experience while you b**** and moan about Larry Smith who is an ex-Rocket with no previous coaching experience.

i don't even know why these names are always thrown out. Van Gundy won't hire these guys. If 1 rocket makes the staff you would be very lucky.

Mike Dunleavy would have probably gone the opposite way but not Van Gundy. Mario Elie, Kenny Smith, Calvin Murphy, Avery Johnson and whoever else has been mentioned as a candidate most likely will not happen.

What's funny is that they expect assistant coaches to lead us to the playoffs, do every thing the head coach does, and get Yao the ROY...........ALL WHILE BEING ASSISTANT COACHES ON THE BENCH.......
