Reuters says it's merely a "widely accepted view" http://today.reuters.com/news/newsa...UKOC_0_US-MIDEAST-IRAN-AHMADINEJAD.xml&rpc=22
I think they are referring to the six-million deaths. That's a widely-accepted estimate, but there was never any type of count done.
that thread title i'm sure will offend some. the death count may be fictional, but the holocaust is fact.
the rolls and the counts kept were destroyed by the nazi's before the allies attacked. so its impossible to get an accurate estimate of the numbers.
Not to be an ass, but I wish you could change the thread title which is a pretty offensive query for something so tragic.
6 million was a conservative estimation.....there were also countless other people killed who were non-jewish in relation to the holocaust. I'd bet the true numbers are well above 10 million lives.....
TJ- you voted no, is that because you believe the numbers are off, or do you believe the holocaust is a myth?
The actual poll question is fine, but the wording of your thread title has the connotation of not asking whether the death estimates of the Holocaust are factual but rather whether the event occurred at all. I know that's not what you meant, but I think the wording is offensive.
actually, i think that's what reuters is doing, suggesting the holocaust is not pure fact, but something that "may have happened," according to some historians. that's the point of the thread.
I think the numbers were exaggerated as a part of the propaganda. Obviously, many Jews were murdered, there is no question about that.
Yes, but that wasn't the poll question. The question was do you believe 6mm Jews were murdered. It is incredibly hard to measure that, since many of the concentration camp prisoners were non-Jews (gypsies, political prisoners, Russians, etc). Estimates are all over the map.
i didn't really anticipate objection to the 6M figure, so perhaps i should have just said, "Is the Holocaust a fact?" would that change your vote? langal, why did you vote as you did?
btw, if you visit Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, there's a display showing the numbers of Jews from each country that died. if you add in gypsies, Russians, political prisoners, etc,the numbers are even greater. and the Soviet Union claimed 20M war dead, which of course includes soldiers, as well as deaths in concentration camps, starvation, etc.
It's shocking to me that a president of any country would stoop so low to question whether the Holocaust was real or not regardless of their stance on what is occuring present day between Israel and the Palestinians. If a leader of a country is so blind to the facts about the Holocaust, then should said person be a leader of a country? Why doesn't he take a trip to Auschwitz or any of the other camps to see for himself but I think he would just say this was fabricated. I think Germany should re-think it's relationship with Iran. Why would anyone do business with a country whose president denies Germany's past? I would suggest that the Iranian president do his homework before sounding like a complete ass. It's one thing to want to believe it(as he obviously would much rather do) but to suggest that it isn't fact when, clearly, they have no motivation to even do their homework on the matter or any sane person would be buried in the evidence...is despicable. I would hope that others in Iran are a little more objective with regards to the Holocaust. ****ing rant off. Carry on.
This is the way the link reads now, basso. They must have figured out that their wording was wacked. "Historians say six million Jews were killed in the Nazi Holocaust. Ahmadinejad's remarks drew swift rebukes from Israel and Washington." And so on. This is one of those polls where one would question the sanity of a member who voted, "no," unless they felt the number was low. Many may decide not to vote at all, because they find the poll offensive for different reasons. Keep D&D Civil.
