A lots of things are going on this season. Tmac & Landry left, Martin & Hill & Jeffries came. The team is playing under Adelman's system. However, it seems the team is not closer to the playoffs. People are keep saying that we will be a great team when Yao comes back next season. Is the current team really a 'YAO' away from a true contender?

We are really close but with the departure of Landry i think we need an aggresive scorer at the power forward position.

Call me mad, but I do think when Yao comes back we will be a contender. The team everyone will have to go through in the west is the Lakers, we all know that. And call me double crazy, but I think the Lakers know we can beat them in a series. They wouldn't admit it of course, but we are in their head. ;)
    Yao-KevMizzle-and the crew can certainly compete. My guess.....probably a 4th seed....ish.

    Playoff Contender -SI
    Championship Contender - NO

We lack one more piece to be elite, once Yao returns.

We will. If Lowry and Ariza can become premier defensive stoppers, our team will be a contender.

I voted no, but if Lowry, Brooks, Ariza, and Bud continue to improve, it's not out of the question.

I voted No. This group even with Yao is only a top 5 in the west but not a 'true title contender' We are a really good PF away from that (doesn't have to be a all-star). Morey knows this and that will be his main focus this summer. To bring one in. From that point hopefully Hill develops into a player to give us a solid backup at PF/C. Then we would be very good for years to come.

Yao puts us up there with Denver and Dallas.

Yao + another premiere player puts us up there with L.A. and Cleveland (if not above).

    Yes!
If you mean when Yao Ming comes back we add another player as good
    as Yao!
Then we will be contenders! :p

no western conference team is a Yao away from beating the Lakers.

Kobe, Pau, Artest, and Odom, not to mention Bynum is still improving.

if you added Yao and a guy like Caron Butler to this team, we'd still not be good enough to beat the Lakers.

the Lakers just have every position filled perfectly. Gasol is the best PF in the game, Odom and Artest are big fowards who can guard multiple positions. Sorry but, the Lakers have the championship locked up for the next 5 years.

No, this team is having trouble winning withought Yao. I hate to bring T-mac in this, but he got us to the playoffs by himself. Maybe it's chemistry, but the way the team is playing now I don't see them as championship contenders.

No they're still lacking a starting point guard who can pass into the post.

If you consider Dallas-Denver level, a contender. Yes

Not so close near the Lakers and possibly the Cavs.

The Rockets need a (real) backup center (was occupied by Dikembe Mutombo) and dynamic power forward (was occupied by Carl Landry).

We've replaced T-Mac (Kevin Martin) and Ron Artest (Trevor Ariza), younger pieces . . . and arguably better as duo.

This means that we are all really hoping that draft picks pan out, or we're going to field a very weak second unit and a team that struggles when Yao is off the floor.

A lot people are forgetting Yao will most likely have his playing time artificially limited next year to 25 minutes a game or so. This means we are going to need to find a backup center who can rebound and defend the rim to be anywhere near the the top.
