Either his rehabs is successful or it is not. If the rehab is not successful not, then obviously he retires. The insurance pays the rest of his salary and he's off the payroll and the cap numbers. Even if Bobby succeeds in rehabbing, though, it seems the Rockets have reason to just trade him anyway. First and foremost, even if he comes 100% back in November, can you really count on him still being in one piece in April given his injury history (not just the recent ones, but he's missed his fair share of games during his entire career)? If the team wants to rack up some playoff wins, it would seem not to make sense to take a chance on someone with a questionable health history, especially one at the advanced age of 33. Also, the Rockets seems to have made a concerted effort to get younger and more atheletic players this offseason and there may or may not be enough minutes for Sura... all else being equal, they might want to throw the youngsters into action and see if they can do anything-- and there are lots of younger guards on the rosters.. Snyder is 23, Kill Bill is 23, Head is 23, JL is 23, and even Battier is only 27 and Rafer is 29 for a few more days. Do you really want to keep these guys on the bench and play someone you can't count on being healthy come playoff time? He's not a bad guy to keep on round "just in case", but would he be happy staying on the pine? Sura is a good player and probably a good vet presence on this team or any other team. But the fact is you cannot count on his health in the long run, and the Rockets might feel the need to just move on without him.
Don't forget JVG loves vetran players. He now has an almost all rookie back court so he'll have to play these young guys, but if Sura does make it back JVG would love to play him over the youngins. This is the same coach that played Mark Jackson at the age of God knows what and don't forget old man Mutombo.
i also doubt he would be getting any PT this upcoming season. he is behind head in sg rotation and behind JL3 and vspan in PG. plus, no way he will be ready come all-star game. would we be able to throw him in via trade with another player? does he even have any position asset left?
Why would any other team be willing to take a chance on Sura more than us. If he can comeback 80% you want him on this weak bench, you want him in practice and in the locker room. Short of that, he retires. Jenny: "Run Bobby, Run"
Not sure why people want to throw Sura under the bus just yet. If he can't make it back, then the answer is simple. But if he can, who is going to know about except for our team in practice? Assuming Sura is healthy enough to contribute in the slightest, he is a valuable reserve come postseason play and would be solid locker room and practice court influence, as someone mentioned above.
I may be very partial when it comes to sura, but here's why the rockets should keep him. he's got the most heart out of any of the rockets. if you're talking about experience, this is the guy who will teach the younger guys what it takes to make a long, solid career in the NBA as a role player. I agree that he may not be the most fit, or best athlete on the roster even if he is 100%, but he brings that invaluable toughness to the team. i mean, there's a reason why he gets hurt so much, and that's because he plays his heart out every time he's on the floor.
If Sura can play, he will. A strong rebounding guard who can be an enforcer will always have a place on any NBA team. His number of minutes will depend on whether he comes back at 60% or 85%.
We have enough depth to let Sura rehab completely. Give him off until the All-Star break if he needs it. A lesson learned from last year is you never have enough depth. Someone is bound to go down - so it would be great to have a Sura to step in or to provide a post All-Star game boost.
i cannot disagree more. first off, there's no indication that CD doesn't like him. it sucks that he got injured, but i believe the rockets appreciate him from an organizational standpoint. even more importantly, even if they did want to trade him, it would be a bad business move b/c we'd be selling low (with all the time off and injuries he has had). so i cannot even imagine this happening. i think the signing of vspan (and hopefully JL3) is for insurance purposes. there's no guarantee sura will be able to play much this year, so it doesn't hurt to have quality backups at the ever-so imporatn PG position.
Sura was without a doubt (at least in my mind) THE reason we did so well, two years ago. He was our garbage guy. Any time we needed a rebound, he got it. A three? Sura was there. A steal? An Assist? He did all the intangibles. I don't think were even a five seed without Sura two years ago. If he can play, you keep him. If he can play as well as he could two years ago, you start him. Let's face it, the Rockets are soft. While Yao is coming into his own, we really have yet to see what the new Yao/T-Mac combo is going to play like. Until Yao can be an enforcer in his own right, we need a Sura.
Sura was one of my favorite players two seasons ago, I just love the way he plays, but I have never changed my view that he will not play for the Rockets again. His injuries are just too severe. Pick up games, yes; NBA, no.
