I'm wondering what the general concensus is here, so I'm going to try this "poll" business. Please forgive me if I screw it up. Yes, he's lying No, McNamee lied Both of them lied at least some, we'll probably never know, and I'm just tired of hearing about it
I find it hard to believe that Roger never tried anything. He's an ultra-competitive athlete who hates nothing more than to be outdone by someone else. He craves the spotlight (no matter what bs he said in that interview). I would not be surprised at all to find out that he did try it but backed off...a la his lover, Andy Pettitte. However, McNamee has reason to fabricate the story. Without hard proof, it's impossible to believe either one. And yes, I wish it would just go away. The less I hear about Clemens the better.
I voted "yes" because I don't trust anything he says, a somewhat credible source has accused him of using performance enhancing drugs, his creepy close best friend has admitted to using PEDs, and he fits the profile of a PED user. Is it possible that Clemens is telling the truth now? Sure, but that's not what I think.
What reason does McNamee have to lie? If he lies he goes to jail. Pettitte alone was a big enough name for McNamee to give up and it would make no sense to tell the truth about Pettitte but lie about Clemens. But I guess you are right because Clemens doesn't have an ear growing out of his forehead.
All I know is Roger was a struggling mid 30's power pitcher. Next thing he turns the clock backward and win 3 more cy youngs. The workouts are now in full legendary mode. This trainer that was there when the turn around started stated he gave you shots in ur ass. I'd say he's lying
i think a lot of folks do and should. Barry Bonds has been overly scrutinized and criticized (probably deservedly so) b/c of his allegded (sp?) use of steroids and breaking the most hallowed record in MLB. i don't see why we should be apathetic about Roger's circumstances.
I was apathetic about Barry's circumstances too. It's all just such a non-story IMO. I'm just tired of hearing about it. I don't care. Which, of course, begs the question....why am I posting in this thread? And the answer to that question is.....because I'm an attention w****.
The only reason I even remotely care is to watch Roger paint himself into a corner. It is a train wreck waiting to happen. First he denies, then he gets asked to testify in front of congress, where, if he is caught in a lie there, he goes to jail. Roger should have just said...."Nah, these are baseless facts" and just let it go. But by him being such a wuss about it....it makes him look worse, and he is putting himself in jeapordy, which would be fun to watch. Eveyrone likes a train wreck. DD
Uh, no he wasn't. His last three years in Boston he had a 3.x ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. In fact, in the second half of the '96 season, BEFORE HE EVER MET McNamee, he was 6-2, with a 2.09 ERA in his last 10 starts, and after the All-Star break struck out 123 men in 111 1/3 innings. As far as turning the clock backward, 14 men have won multiple Cy Young awards and 8 of them pitched into their 40's.
I don't think you know. A strugling mid-30's pitcher? He's had ONE losing year his entire career and you know him as a struggling mid-30's pitcher? 33 yrs: 10-5 34 yrs: 10-13 35 yrs: 21-7 36 yrs: 20-6 61-31 isn't a struggling mid-30's pitcher
Roger is smarter than that. He's not painting himself into a corner. He's suing McNamee. Unlike Bonds who did nothing of the sort.
I voted for C because I'm tired of it and because Roger at LEAST lied about "not giving a crap about the hall of fame" I believe that Roger is mostly telling the truth.. and surely has a few things he's not sharing (maybe he tried something once). But I don't think he did it with McNamee. But who knows, really.. we never will.
At this point its one guys word against anothers I really want to say Rocket is lying but I'm going to let him slide and say they are both lying.
Let's be a little more accurate and representative: Year__Team__W__L___ERA_____IP 1993__Sox__11_14___4.46___191.2 1994__Sox___9__7___2.85___170.2 1995__Sox__10__5___4.18___140.0 1996__Sox__10_13___3.63___242.2 At this point he's a washed up 34 year-old pitcher who went 40-39 the last four seasons, which is why the Red Sox let him go. I don't blame them. But, ah yes, the fountain of youth. What "juice" was Roger drinking? 1997__Jays_21__7___2.05___264.0. Cy Young 1998__Jays_20__6___2.65___234.2. Cy Young This is a more accurate representation of the issue at hand. The steroids started in 1997. His win total was 211 after the 1996 season. He was just about done. He had a lot injuries and staying healthy was a problem. Steroids allowed him to extend his career until he won an additional 143 games and became a baseball legend, banking an additional $100+ million. The temptation was too great to pass up.
