He wants to be a starter. He wants the big bucks. He wants to get his career & reputation back on track. Houston has & is assembling one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Houston has one of the best quarterback coaches in the game. Houston has offered to GIVE him the starting position. Houston has offered him a one year contract, that would allow him to reestablish his reputation & become an unrestricted free agent again next year. So, what's the big deal? If he's as good as he thinks he is, then why aren't teams lining up to sign him? One reason might be, that he has never played more than 12 games in any one season. His quarterback rating for last year was 75.9 & he threw 5 touchdowns, while giving up 7 interceptions. He was also sacked 31 times. Instead, he's not happy with the $1 million offer. He's now talking with Tampa Bay, which has Brad Johnson & Shaun King on their roster. I'm of the opinion that he's a very short sighted person & might cause problems when the team decides that Carr is ready to play. Maybe we should tell him to take his unproven talent elsewhere. Here's the article that started me on this venting session. http://bucs.tbo.com/bucs/MGALOU0WKYC.html Bucs Step Up Talks With Former Bills QB Johnson By ROY CUMMINGS rcummings@tampatrib.com Published: Mar 9, 2002 TAMPA - The Bucs may be on the verge of adding another competitor to their arms race. Unhappy with the offer he received from the Houston Texans, free agent quarterback Rob Johnson has stepped up contract talks with the Bucs, who could sign the former Bills starter as early as this weekend, according to a high-ranking Bucs official. Should he be signed, Johnson would join Brad Johnson and Shaun King and become the third quarterback on the Bucs' roster with experience as an NFL starter. The crowded depth chart is one reason a deal with Rob Johnson could fall through. He is looking to secure a starting role and has targeted Houston as his most desired destination. However, Johnson reportedly was put off by the Texans' plans to draft David Carr at No. 1 overall and immediately begin grooming him as their starter. He also was said to be unhappy with the Texans' offer of $1 million for one year. While the Bucs talked with Johnson on Friday, running back Warrick Dunn talked with the Eagles in Philadelphia on the second leg of what likely will be a three-city tour. Dunn, who visited Detroit on Thursday and likely will visit Atlanta early next week, will not enter into contract talks with any team until completing his tour, according to his agent. After visiting with the Eagles, Dunn said he was impressed by the team's facility and staff, but his first choice is to re-sign with Tampa Bay, according to Leigh Steinberg. ``Warrick has been very up front with Tampa,'' Steinberg said. ``If his role there can be a fulfilling one, then that's the place he'd like to stay.'' That doesn't appear to be the case with Bucs free agent tight end Dave Moore. ``All things being equal, I'd rather be here [Pittsburgh],'' Moore said after spending Friday morning visiting the Steelers in Pittsburgh. ``The place I really want to be is here.'' Moore, a nine-year veteran, played at the University of Pittsburgh. But there's more to his desires than simply wanting to return to the Steel City. Moore, a senior running back at Pitt when Bucs coach Jon Gruden was coaching Pitt wide receivers, more recently worked with Steelers offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, the Bucs' quality control coach in 1994 and tight ends coach in 1995. Like the Bucs, the Steelers appear interested in signing Moore only as a backup tight end and long snapper. Neither team has made a significant offer to Moore. ``Tampa has talked about [re-signing me], but it was very short,'' Moore said. ``We haven't got into anything in detail.'' The Bucs appear well on their way to replacing Moore. They have a visit with former Colts tight end Ken Dilger slated for this weekend, and they've also talked with free agents Marco Battaglia (Redskins) and Christian Fauria (Seattle). The Bucs on Friday named 16-year NFL veteran Johnny Parker their strength and conditioning coach. Mike Morris, who once ranked as high as fourth in the world among sprinters, was named Parker's assistant. Both last worked with the Patriots.
I don't want that dude at all. Everything I hear and read about him says he's a selfish punk. He'd rather take a sack than throw an incompletion and hurt his stats. Fugghettaboutit!
I was surprised to see all the initial interest in Johnson. this is not the guy you want mentoring Carr.
Amen to that, Chievous. See ya, Glass Rob. Go revive your career elsewhere if you want to be a dick. We're offering you just about everything you want, but that's not enough, is it? Shove off then. We need team players, anyway. I say bring on Jeff Blake...
hey, VesceySux. . . I know this isn't the right forum, but I just thought I'd let you know that there's an ebay auction that's going to end on the sifl & olly vcd in a few hours. right now, the bid is up to like $55. you want I should make a bid, and we'll work out the details later? how much is too much in your opinion? I don't know if you have e-mail, but if you do, you can reply to king14@aol.com.
Blake...uggh. I'm sorry, but he's overated which is hard to do with the way many believe he's a decent backup at best. I want Johnson. He's the best available of a bad crowd. If he gets hurt. Big deal. Carr just comes in a little early. The Tampa Bay thing is just a contract ploy. Have y'all ever played Poker? I don't think badly of players that play money games in March during FA. Two weeks before season with a guy under contract yes. If he signs with them, he'll be guaranteed the starter position or be offered more money. He sounds more evil day by day. He's a prima donna. Big whoop. I like QBs that think they're good. Its better than the QBS that know they're bad. Good mercenaries aren't suppose to give you that warm fuzzy feeling. If he costs too much, oh well. No big deal. The Texans get someone else in their price range which is in the completely crappy QB range. Johnson atleast has upside something Chandler barely had 3 years ago.
Don't know about the headcase, but I do know that he is a buccaneer...according to ESPN: http://msn.espn.go.com/nfl/news/2002/0309/1348340.html
I don't think Johnson is a headcase just because he changed his mind about wanting to come to Houston. I highly doubt he was going to improve his stock after playing a year in Houston, like was the supposed plan. If the Texans had gotten him for 1mill, that would have been a steal for a decent filler qb for a year. They can find another filler qb, so it's no big loss.
