Is Moving Steve Francis or Cuttino Mobley Inevitable?

I personally do not care to see either player go, but there is no way the Rockets can come back with Kelvin Cato and Maurice Taylor as their Power Fowards next season, and say their closer to being a Championship contender. And in order to upgrade that position, they are going to have to make a trade, becuae they have no cap space to go after any big fish. However there are only three players on this team with any trade value of significance; Yao Ming, Steve Francis, and Cuttino Mobley. And I know many people will say that this years playoff experience was good for them and so forth, but lets be realistic, how much better can Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, Maurice Taylor, Jim Jackson, and Kelvin Cato get? But saying that I would not want the Rockets to go after a post player like Elton Brand, because he is another player who needs the ball, and thats not good considering your building your team around Yao Ming. Ideally I believe a guy like Kenyon Martin who is in my opinion a Jeff Van Gundy type player, next to Yao Ming. But what would you give up to get him?

first of all, why would you want kenyon? he's fugazi...tim thomas even said so. (this is a joke...and I think it's funny that tim thomas was a year behind mo taylor in calling out martin....apparently being a "fake thug" means that you're a power forward who gets some boards and is a nasty shot blocker)

here's where I see the issue with our back court:

steve francis takes questionable shots, turns the ball over, and by nature is a 2 guard. but all the mistakes he makes occur because he genuinely wants to win. this being said, he is more popular, tougher and more marketable than cuttino.

cuttino takes quesitonable shot, turns the ball over, and by nature is a 2 guard. in my opinion his mistakes often come as an attempt to draw attention to himself, i.e. pull up fade away jumpers from 30 ft, working hard on D only when the opponent has a high profile.

we need a power forward, and either of these 2 can net a PF in a trade. I'd hate to part w/ francis, but realistically, he's the only tradeable person who will bring back a top flight PF (brand, martin, that bunch).

cuttino will bring a pf, but none of the stars that the BBS crew craves.

I vote keep francis, and get a middle of the road pf via free agency.

So, does that mean bringing in a tall PG and moving SF3 to the 2? Or moving JJ to the 2 and bringing in a sharpshooting 3? Or taking a risk and start Boki at the 3?

Mobley does not "turn the ball over." He average only 2.3 TOPG. He's true shooting guard (by nature).

And please don't say that if Mobley "had Francis responsibility at PG" then he'd turn the ball over more. That's not the issue. Mobley is a SG and he does his job as well as his abilities allow him to do.

It's true that some of Mobley shots are questionable. But I think that has to do with having two SG on the court at the same time (Francis and Mobley). We may confuse one player's habits for another player's habits.

Separate the two and you'd see that Mobley isn't as bad a SG as you may think.

If "or" is meaning "Mobley", then yes. He'll go before SF.

If CD did a straight up trade of Kenyon Martin for Steve, Les wouldn't just fire CD, he'd take him out behind the barn and shoot him. Martin doesn't even average 10 rbg in the East!

And where have people started to get the idea that Brand needs the ball to be effective? He gets a lot of his points from offensive rebounds and putbacks, and he can make the midrange jumper. He would be ideal next to Yao Ming.

As far as your original question, the answer is yes. JVG wants and needs a controlled offense that will stop putting a knife in his defense's back with turnovers. If we hadn't had the worst turnover-to-forced turnover ratio in the league, we probably would have been able to average holding opponents under 80 points per game and had the best D in the league.

In addition, I believe that the reason Yao Ming has shied away from some open shots is that he has been deferring to the current leaders, Steve and Cat. JVG needs to trade at least one of them away and impress on Yao at the same time that HE is the man and that if he gets an open shot, he damn well better shoot the ball.

Oh yeah - and the third reason the answer is yes? Doc Rocket said so.

Mobley can catch and shoot, Francis has to dribble.

    Mobley fits, Francis doesn't .

Mobley plays solid defense Francis doesn't.

Mobley makes team planes, Francis goes to the Super Bowl.

Guess which one is being traded?

You tell me, I guarantee you that Mobley will get traded before SF is traded.

Yes, Mobley is a better shooter and defender, but SF does everything else, which is something the Rockets need.

You can find Mobley's everywhere, but finding a PG that has done 20-6-6 for his career is tough. Les/CD/JVG wouldn't hesitate if asked whether they would rather trade Mobley or Francis. Because if they had to, they would pick Mobley in a heartbeat.

If the Rockets are looking to change the team next season, Steve will go before Cat. Trading Yao or Steve would be the only moves that I think will alter the way this team plays (sloppy, ugly offense). Trading a role player like Cat doesn’t significantly make the team different at all unless he brings back an all-star caliber player, which he won’t.

Uhm, Antonio Daniels can give you 20pts a game with Francis' shooting percentage of this season, as a matter of fact Moochie can aswell. Those are two Pg's who can do what you said no other PG could do.

6 assists per game? Hm, Brent barry can give ya atleast 5 per game, with just as many turnovers, but he'd also bring consistent scoring and very nice steady jumpshot and stop and pop perimeter game, plust most importantly SMARTS.

6 rebounds per game? Since when is it necassary or an important stat for a PG? That's just an unecassary plus really.
But if you insist, another gaurd that could get us 6 rebounds is T-mac, but what he'd bring that Steve can't, is too numerous to go on about as I have before.

Cat? Well, he gives you what Steve can't, a player that KNOWS his role, means SMARTS, a player that plays his role on a more consistent basis, called a MATURE good player. And a player who plays D, as you yourself admitted.

However, Cat would not get us much on his own, if traded, Steve however, can due to his showcase in the Lakers game. You add another of our players, like Cato or Mo or even Cat. And I'm sure he could even get us T-mac.

And it would be too good a deal to pass up for both teams. Cat and Steve would instantly improve Orlando, being in the east. While T-mac who isn't god, can more than improve a team that includes, Yao, Boki, JJ, scott padgett (if we resign him, surely would be cheap), Cato, Mo, Cat (either of those three that isn't traded to get T-mac). And of course, you add Brent barry, and both teams are more than happy.:)

20-6-6 and similar other stats are irrelevant. It's deeper than that.

Francis can't finish a fastbreak to save his life...Mobley can at least finish some of the time.

Including the TE the max amount of contracts Francis could independently net is ~$18.5m while Mobley could net ~$13.5m. Francis would likely net a near All Star and a solid role player while Mobley nets you 2 solid role players. Why bother with the latter unless Francis is already gone?

The inside-out game has appeared to hurt Mobley less than Francis.

Either both will be gone or just Francis IMHO.

Are you kidding me? Moochie can do the same things as SF? You should really stick with T-Mac posts.

Yes, Brent Barry can get 5 a game, but do we have Brent Barry? Wouldn't it seem better to have Barry running at PG with SF next to him. Brent and Cat have similar games, just that Brent can pass better. I'm all for bringing Barry in, just not for SF.

When is it necessary for a PG to rebound? When your 7'6" center doesn't rebound like he should, when your backup PF doesn't rebound at all, I think it is pretty important to get as many rebounds as you can. Yes, it is a plus, but for the Rockets, it has become a necessity. SF led the team in rebounding for the Rockets in the playoffs, where would we have been if he only grabbed 2-3 a game?

Do you really believe that a SF/Cat/Cato or MoT could land us T-Mac? Yes, I would do it in a heartbeat, but Orlando wouldn't. If you were them, would you do the deal? SF/Cat have reputations of being ball-hogs and turning it over. Cato could be used. MoT is untouchable (by other teams), why would Orlando want him?

Us fans tend to think too highly of our players trade values.

    1. SF- highest trade value for Rockets, still has max contract, has reputation of dribbling and TOs too much.

    2. Cato- people will be interested in him, his contract still makes teams think twice.

    3. Cat- good player, is getting "old" compared to all the young guys coming in. Can find replicas of Mobley easily, especially w/o giving up T-Mac.

    4. MoT- his contract, lack of rebounding, lack of defending, makes him the most untradable guy on the team. Trust me on this, the last thing a team wants to get is a MoT.

Hmm- I respect you wanting T-Mac, I want him too. But to always bring T-Mac into every threads is quite annoying. You have to know what is realistic and what is not. And just because they said "they want T-Mac to make a decision," it doesn't make him any easier to get. No matter what deal the Rockets offer for him, there will always be another team with a better offer.

I guarantee you that Orlando is expecting the very, very, best of offers, that would include Yao's name, which isn't going to happen.

Mobley is best suited as a 6th man! Keep him and he'll be instant offense, defense and energy off the bench. All of the good teams have that guy. Ginobili, Harrington, B. Jackson. He'd still get 35 minutes per game and Jim Jackson minutes cut down also. Just acquire a PF and a back up PG in the offseason. If Yao improves even more than we could be a top 5 team in the West.

Ah yes, one thing I forgot to add.

You may be able to find a lot of Mobleys and replacements, but not one at his price. ;)
