Can we next start a "Who's the better capologist, aelliott or Larry Coon?" thread next week? Please?

    I suppose it's all moot.

I maintained all along that if Mobley demanded he wanted to go to Philly or somewhere and would sign for the 2.25 exception, I would have let him, and still respected him. So, for the same reason, it's impossible to say Shandon doesn't have class. He jumped off the team, and they don't make the Finals, hah! Does it really even matter? They're both Rockets, doesn't that make them the most caring people in the world?

To answer your question, it's whoever stays with the Rockets longer. [IMG]

By the way, don't forget to buy some Cheese Wiz!

    I don't know.

    Who went to college longer?

What colleges did they go to?

    Did they graduate?

Steve's the classiest, he left that nasty polluted redneck town Vancouver for Houston.

When you ask who is classier, do you mean on the court or off?

Mobley has a child by his girlfreind. Are they married yet? To have a child and for that child not to have a "Family" (mother and father) together, that is classless in my book.

As for Shandon, I don't know much of his personal life, but if its anything like he conducts himself on the court, he is first class all the way.

I disagree because many people have children and are not married. Maybe Cuttino and his girlfriend really haven't been together long and the pregnancy was an "accident". I understand that having a child is a huge resposibility, but marriage is also a very big step too. Cuttino can be a father to his child without being married to his girlfriend.

As for who is classier, I don't know. I respect both guys very much and think they are both classy gentlemen.

Oh Oh...you are going to make me repeat a Hakeem story.

He told his Rice girlfriend he wouldn't marry her until she proved her fertility, claiming Nigerian custom. Well, she got pregnant liked asked and he dumped her.

He has since repented and changed his ways, but he was utterly classless at Mobley's age. Everyone at Rice who knew the said relationship would agree. In fact, the man himself says he was a mean jerk early and that's why he refound religion.

Mobley is way ahead of Hakeem off the court at similar age considering how well he gets along with management.

Of the court with management, shandon screwed his fans as well.

did I say, throw down the gloves!!!!

    who wants some cheetos?

    Achebe,
I'm hoping you just forgot to put a smilie after that comment. [IMG]

Shandon has been a class citizen throughout his short NBA career, even though he hasn't done anything especially classy (as Mobes did) yet, to my knowledge. Some Utah fans might consider Anderson classless, but did he do anything wrong? He just excersized his right of free agency, and for less money. He merely wanted to play in a better situation, and in a city that appealed to him more than Salt Lake City. While Mobes also settled for less money, but was happy with where he was.

Therefore, as Nike said, their tied until we find out who stays longer. [IMG]

Since when did changing jobs denote a lack of class? If an attorney happened to like the city of Houston better than SLC, and changed jobs for that reason, nobody would note that. In fact, if he took less money, people would applaud him for his lack of greed and his good priorities. Why should a basketball player be any different?

During vacations, I visit my college gf at her home in SLC, and may I say, it's an EXTREMELY boring and intolerant place. I mean, it's safe, and the mountains are nice, but the mormon presence is suffocating. I can't blame Shandon for that (btw, he's still demonized in their newspaper).

    Azim,

But of course. [IMG] I am actually taking a trip to Vancouver later this month in order to evaluate it as a residence for the 'Bush years'. I personally think that Steve handled the Vancouver thing in a classless fashion. Everyone was over it after last summer, but the things he said before the draft... what a moron.

At least he's a great player on my favorite team. [IMG]

anyone who plays in Houston for less money then he otherwise would is classy. Anyone who doesn't want to play in houston isn't worth his weight in cow sh*t. What can I say, I'm bias.

So, Mobley and Shandon are the classiest guy in the world. Barkley was classy when he played with us. A sack of sh*t when he was in pheonix.

Going along with that logic, ya'll can figure out what I think about Quitten.

I don't care !! As long as they are both Rockets, they have my support.

Another Hakeem story, during his early years he was demanding to renegotiate his contract.

The rocks refused, and Hakeem said "Fine then my leg is hurt" The Rockets suspended him, and Hakeem demanded to be traded, saying they had hurt his honor.

Well, guess what, the Rockets had Hakeem saying it on tape, heard it myself.

Hakeem and Charlie Thomas finally go together on a long plane ride to Toykyo.

Yep, Hakeem was a jerk, but he's not anymore.
Now he is a SAINT !!

    Achebe,
Its all good. I know what you mean, Steve handled the situation poorly from the start, but he is young and hasn't shown the public any other classless acts since. He will come around.

    Heypard,
That infamous Hakeem/girlfriend story is indeed true, but not as simplistic or straighforward as you made it out to be.
According to Hakeem in his 1996 autobiography, "Living the Dream", there is more to it.
Hakeem did not simply dump his girlfriend after she was pregnant. They had been living together for 5 years and were married under Texas common law, but his girlfriend (Lita) wanted to make it official. So Hakeem bought her a ring and they were engaged. But, as Dream says in his autobio, as the baby's birth approached, he began having doubts about his future with Lita. As she was starting to pressure him for marriage, he began to realize that he would be making a mistake if he married her, because things had changed between them. So after the baby was born, his girlfriend pretty much had enough of his indeciveness and told him to leave her (mom's) house. Of course, he could have moved back and been with Lita if he agreed to marry, but he felt that would be a mistake. However, as I'm sure you know, to this day he is a hands-on father and both he and Lita take care of their daughter Abisola, even though they're separated. Hakeem also says he knew Lita wanted the to do the right thing and that what he did was very irresponsible. He was immature, but not quite a jerk.

    DaDakota,
The story you mentioned was also discussed by Hakeem in his book. This was not that early in his career, it happened around March of '92. And the problem wasn't with owner Charlie Thomas as much as it was with GM Steve Patterson. Despite being a perennial all-star, he was wasn't being paid market-value, so he asked Charlie Thomas to restrucure it a few years earlier, to which the owner agreed. So when Olajuwon brought it up again in '92 after the promise went unfulfilled, Thomas told him to talk to Patterson. Hakeem had pulled a hamstring, and when Patterson came to practice to talk to him, Hakeem was in the locker room tending his injury. Patterson was furious and immediatley blamed Dream for faking it. Hakeem adamantly denied he was lying, and that his injury was legitimate. He could not run, and when he went out to shoot around, he was wincing in pain. Patterson went out to the media anyways and told Houston reporters Hakeem was faking the injury and threatening to sit out to get a new contract. According to Hakeem in his book, he never even wanted to sit out, and was frustrated that management would question his integrity and honour, after all he had done for the organization on the court. Teammates aupported him, including Kenny Smith and Otis Thorpe. The Rockets doctors said there was nothing wrong with him, but when he got a second opinion from a Houston orthopedic, the surgeon advised Olajuwon not to play. So the rockets suspended him, which led to Hakeem to demanding a trade. He was fed up with management for defaming his character through the media and handling the situation without class.
There were a countless number of rumours swirling around. He was going to the Clips for Manning and Charles Smith. To the Heat for Seikaly, S.Smith and Harold "Baby Jordan" Miner. Charles Oakley, Marc Jackson and Gerald Wilkins were also mentioned in talks.

But nothing happened, and after the long plane trip to Tokyo you talked about DaDakota, Charlie and Hakeem got it straightened out, and a contract negotiotion was finally agreed upon 5 months later.

Man, I just realized what an absurdly long post this was, but I just wanted to clear a few misconceptions about our local legend. Hakeem no doubt had some problems when he was younger, but there are always two sides to the story.

From the information that has been told about Hakeem early in his life. It's easy to state that he did not have any class. I don't see it that way, I feel as if he always had class; but he was still immature.

Hey we all do dumb things early in our lives.
But do we judge these acts as having no class, immature acts or basically handling a decision the wrong way?
