Personally, I can't say that I know much about Obama's wife Michelle save the "I'm ashamed of America" remarks. However, I was at a small dinner party and was talking politics to the wife of a friend of mine when the following curious twist in the conversation came up. Perhaps because she is black, I was surprised by her observation that the only real negative about Obama's campaign is his wife...."the black Hillary," as she said, adding that her feeling from watching Michelle is that the First Lady hopeful is as mean, vindictive, ambitious and conniving as Hillary. Thoughts?
My thought is I don't want ANYONE sleeping in the White House that is not proud of America or who is ashamed of America. I don't think that's an unreasonable request, either...
thumbs, did you really need to start this thread? Considering how you feel about Hillary, I can't think of a bigger slam by you regarding Mrs. Obama. Can you? You're going to say that it was just something that came up in conversation, and I make posts like that myself. Like you, I hear all sorts of things at parties and from various people, including some in state government. I've been slammed before for posting "anecdotal" evidence to support a point. What are we supposed to do? Ignore what we see and hear from day to day? I happen to think some of us have different and interesting perspectives... perspectives some here don't have. Having said that, I rarely start threads, and you just started one that can't help but raise hell. I could be wrong! Impeach Bush. Sentence Him to Community Service. In West Virginia.
Come now, Deckard. Debate and discussion thrives on controversy. Truth is, I don't know much about Michelle Obama and never cared to explore the "qualifications" of someone for "First Lady" (or First Gentleman). However, the observation was curious, and Michelle seems destinated to have a pivotal role in her husband's campaign. All discussion is good. It's the unsaid that gets us in trouble.
^^^ Do you see what I mean, thumbs? I predict multiple pages! Impeach Bush. Sentence Him to Community Service. In West Virginia.
That word has been used for pretty much every important woman in politics ever. Time for a new word, or a new way of thinking.
First Ladies rarely get their hands dirty in the campaign -- they are almost always the softer side. Look at Laura and/or Barbara Bush, Jacqueline Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson, Roslyn Carter, Bess Truman, Mamie Eisenhower, etc. etc. Hillary was cut from a different mold. She had a policy role -- or at least she felt she did. I will give her that. I don't know whether Michelle will settle into the softer side or the dark side when Obama becomes President. That's the intrigue.
Michelle Obama will be a bigger liability than Theresa Heinz Kerry was for Forbes Kerry. She is just so angry all the time, and in no way persuasive as a speaker.
We have to kidnap Mrs Obama and lock her in a cell where they play nothing but The Carpenters and Celine Dion 24/7 until she's just who we want her to be.
Depends on Isiah's point of View: " Knicks president and coach Isiah Thomas denied in a videotaped deposition shown in court Monday that he ever called a female former co-worker a "b****" or a "ho," but said he didn't think it would be as bad for a black man to call a black woman those names as it would be for a white man."
barbara bush? lady bird johnson? i would have to disagree on both of those. at best its fifty/fifty and I don't know if michelle has been any more visable than laura. she's given a token speech here or there. the press has been interested in her. having there own lives doesn't equate to campaigning. as far as laura bush, i agree she's more on the quiet side but did any catch this gem from her own web site btw
also, not to be a jerk but you can infer from your first post about conceptions or misconceptions of mrs. obama. she didn't say she was ashamed of america. you may feel that's semantics but there is a difference.
No, I didn't. However, I absolutely agree with her. India, now a wealthy nation, should be sending twice as much aid as everybody else combined considering all the help they have gotten over the years from the U.S. and other Western nations. However, scolding another nation for lack of concern and assistance is not exactly what you would call hard core politicking. What did Lady Bird do other than campaigning for beautifying Texas roadways with more wildflowers? What did Barbara Bush do other than be a folksy, art-loving mom and grandmom? Making a few campaign speeches in support of their respective husbands cannot be equated to a Hillary bringing out her own health care bill that her husband didn't support once it took fire in Congress.
