I'm watching the Lakers/Kings game, and Kobe is goign off. However, the Kings are not doubling him for some reason, and Shaq is sitting on the bench.

    WHY?????

I also realize that I rarely see Kobe double-teamed. Is this the same for everyone else?

No, he's never doubled, which keeps him from being in the elite class of players in the NBA.

That's the whole point of the Triangle. You can't double team someone (especially a guard) without someone getting an open jumper or a dunk two passes later.

It also keeps the offensive rebounds coming, because the defense (when properly executed) is always two steps behind.

If the triangle kept people from being doubled, every team in the NBA would be running it. The reason he's never doubled is because he has arguably the best player (Duncan) in the NBA on his team. The triangle has nothing to do with it.

The Triangle has everything to do with it. This isn't Steve Kerr we're talking about, getting open shots off of Duncan's game. Kobe did most of his damage in the fourth quarter with Shaq on the bench with foul trouble, and after the Big Fella fouled out.

I've given Kobe his fair share of stick in my day, and the Kings are some pretty bad defenders (Peja coming to help from the left?); but the spacing means everything. It's the difference between having to help from 10 feet (two man games), or 15 feet (Triangle).

So Rudy must be stupid for not running the triangle. He could get single coverage on Francis and Mobley if he did it. SA could get single coverage on Duncan if they only ran the triangle.

Similarly, I don't know how Shaq is getting doubled all the time, with LA running the triangle.

the reason why most teams don't run the triangle is that it is an extremely complicated system that depends less on set plays than the players' own basketball IQs. the players read the defense and execute their offense and plays accordingly. it is a motion offensive system that spaces the floor extremely well, and makes all five players on the floor (theoretically) just as much of a threat as the next guy.

it is an effective system, but it takes at least two seasons for any player to truly get it (though in his book i believe phil jackson said that robert horry picked it up extremely fast). most coaches don't bother using it because in the nba (with the illegal defense rules) there were simpler offensive systems that could be used as effectively without the two year delay.

Speaking of Kobe not being doubled, why wasn't Shaq doubled in the first two games. Even in games 3 and 4, the Kings doubled but not every time. I would like to see what Shaq would do against a mid 1990's George Karl-Seattle Sonics double team. I hated when they doubled Hakeem because they were so quick. As soon as he caught the ball, they had a doubler coming down and it wasn't always from the top. That was a great double team.

I'd say that in any offense, when someone doubles, a team should be able to get an open jumper or dunk.
