since the artest trade ive mixed and matchd the rockets rotations a million different ways(2k8), and i always have trouble determining who to put at center at the start of the 2nd quarter. i stick with alston, tmac, artest, scola and yao as the starters. and then i see the rotation moving something like this. barry, mcgrady, battier, ron, scola. i can see alston or maybe even francis(if hes up to it)holding the point in the case that we are playing a team with a point like williams or paul that plays almost throughout the entire game(and would mismatch barry), i kno we will keep mcgrady in, rotate battier in and most likely put artest at pf so battier gets some time and we keep tmac and ron to continue punishing the opposing D when yaos out.

BUT, i do not see a solution at backup c?? when yao comes out say we keep scola in(which may be our plan) he does a good job scoring and such, but defensively there are some backup centers out there that will out-match his size, not to mention scola would then be playing the entire game(unless we bring in yao with landry and take scola out only to bring him back in at center). but with the recent injury to chuck i cant help but wonder if dorsey fits into all of this. i kno there are questions about his height but hes got that 7ft wingspan. im just wondering if we should be facturing dorsey in as a legit backup center??? or that this guy wont even make the active roster??

hopefully this will refresh peoples memories of what dorsey is capable of..
(sorry i dont kno how to post the actul video :( )
this first vid. is a mix of dorsey at memphis:

this would be dorsey losing a summer league game from the sidelines, but in joey's defense i think he was just trying to prove to alston that he would have his back:

p.s.-its my first thread, be gentle

Dorsey is actually an undersized C. He can play at the 4 spot and 5 as well. He was also drafted in case Carl "The Tooth" Landry didn't sign back.
    Great mix video btw.

I think it depends who we play and how we match up. But, more importantly, how training camp goes for Dorsey. Another trade is always a possibility.

Joeyy Dorsey is no way an undersized C. He has longer hands then any centers i've seen, his wingspan is probably in par with other centers if not greater.

Not to derail this thread but CAN WE PLEASE GET LANDRY RE-SIGNED ALREADY????

Sorry, had to vent. As for the question: I hope not. I know Dorsey has good length but he's still 6'7". Not exactly a guy i'd want matched up against legit 7-footers at the five.

He's a Ben Wallace clone. He can bench 340 lbs, has a good wingspan (over 7 feet). We all know wingspan is more important than height.
So in short, he can play center w/ ease. At the very least, he''s not going to be pushed around like a pansy.

copy and paste from the "embed" field to the right of the video under the description, it's only on the 2nd video you posted as well...

but hopefully he can go ahead and be a Ben Wallace type of player and play the center position because with Scola/Landry(?)/Hayes, there's not much room for him at the PF.

That's the plan apparently. I guess since his standing reach will be the equivalent of an avg 7ft player it should offset his short stature. Add to that his athleticism and we have a player along the lines of a young Ben Wallace.

I still hope we could pick up Joe Smith from Oklahoma so we could get a lil offense out of that position.

draftexpress has a "Average Standing Reach / Wing Span by Height" and compared to others of dorsey's size 6' 6.25, while he is above average in these categories, he still is not up to par with an average 7fter.

Ht. w/o Shoes | Avg. Weight | Avg. Wingspan | Avg. Standing Reach
    7' 0"__________285__________7' 4.3"_________9' 3.1"
    6' 11"_________244__________7' 4.6"_________9' 3.4"
    Joey Dorsey____265__________7' 1.75"________8' 11"
    6' 6.25"______231_________7' 0.3"_______8' 9.5"

included 6'11 in there because they would be 7ft with shoes for a better comparison

I thought Mutombo was our backup center?
I think FO wants to resign Landry, Mutombo, and Dorsey and call it this summer.

i expect us to resign deke, but i purposely didnt mention him as i only expect him to post minutes in the chance that a regular rotation player is either hurt or gets into foul trouble.

To start the season, I doubt Dorsey gets much regular 1st half playing time. Scola will slide over when Yao comes out.

I think the odds are against Dorsey cracking the rotation as a rookie. He's a dumb, undisciplined, immature and untalented player who thinks very highly of himself. I'm not trying to be overly negative, but he didn't impress me at Memphis or during summer league. IMO, the best scenario likely to happen for him is he eats humble pie as a rookie and comes back focused and determined next year after realizing how hard the NBA is.

    Hope he proves me wrong.

Don't forget, though, that Dorsey's quickness and vertical leap are much better than most 6-11 or 7-footers. Those qualities more than make up for the 3-4 inch difference in wingspan/standing reach. Morey even talked about those qualities when Dorsey was introduced to the media.

Also, in today's NBA, most centers are actually shorter than 7 feet tall. And Dorsey's measurements are comparable to most 6-9 or 6-10 players.

I like how he matches up against Utah. The officials want us to wrestle, fine, now we have some wrestlers.

    Hayes - Okur
    Dorsi - Boozer
    Artest - Kirilenko
    McGrady - Brewer
    Rafer - Williams

If we meet them in the playoffs, a fight will break out.

When we resign Mutombo it will be good for Dorsey as well. Mutombo still has great timing at his age and he could help Dorsey learn how to properly block.

I think Dorsey seems to be a better weak-side blocker imo, but we'll see.

Mutombo hasn't been the back up center in a long time Ie he hasn't played regular minutes behind Yao in a long time. He has mostly rested on the bench but last season he played well, when Yao was injured.
As far as I am concerned, it is about time that the Rockets started training their permanent back up center. It is past time for Mutumbo's retirement, he should give younger talent a chance to develop.
He has had a great NBA career and the rockets are just too sentimental in keeping him on the books. :)

You make it seem as if we're doing this out of mercy. If we thought he couldn't be effective anymore, we'd let him go. Last year he was very effective whenever he was on the floor. We just don't want him playing heavy minutes especially when he's such a liability on offense. But as far as changing the pace of a game and being an enforcer there is not much better at it than Mutombo even at 42+.

I prefer Mutombo over Harris. We gave up a lot to win now, and I am sure Dikembe will contribute to our title run. If we could somehow save Harris for next season that would be great.

    Rafer | Brooks | Strawberry
    McGrady | Francis | Head
    Artest | Battier | Barry
    Scola | Landry | Dorsi
    Yao | Deke | Hayes

It comes down to Strawberry or Harris, and we have plenty of forwards.
