Is it time to reconsider the modern basketball shoe?

I've been reading this book called 'born to run' and it's basic hypothesis is that modern shoes are responsible for most injuries in srunning. It says that over protecting the feet has made our foot muscles weak.

In the running world people are starting to ditch the spring like cushioned shoes in favor of minimal protection (vibram five fingers, nike free).

I know that Plantar fasciitis is a big problem in the NBA and I'm wondering if you'll see teams start using more minimal footwear.

Back in the day players used canvas shoes like converse.

Are the hi tech shoes of today even necessary? If players conditioned themselves to have stronger feet would they still get the kind of injuries they get today?

people who were told by doctors they would never run again have started going barefoot and have no injury problems. I'm not suggesting the NBA go barefoot but there's a lot of people now saying that the modern athletic shoe hurts more than it helps.

I think this applies to the NBA. Move the thread if I'm wrong.

    Interesting...
But with endorsements and all, things will never go back.

I think athletic shoes are like helmets in football. It allows people to do things they would not normally do which increases the chance for injury.

    I agree.
I think in high level athletics. . .the feets/ankles/legs are under an incredible
amount of stresses. Things that may not be 'natural' for the normal unprotected foot
to do over and over and over again.

All I have to say is there are some Kenyans running barefoot through Africa laughing at these modern shoes. I wonder what kind of Nikes the Tarahumara wear when running down their prey after chasing them for miles on foot. lol.

I think the human body is capable of some inredible things if we don't sissify it.

its like the argument of using free weights over weight machines. free weights will develop all the small muscles along with the major muscles.

Humans were meant to run barefoot on natural surfaces, such as soil and grass. However, on the hard unforgiving artificial surfaces of wood and cement the small joints of the lower body would be worn out too quickly by impact with the ground if they didn't have something to cushion the impact every time they made contact with the ground, ie. cushioned shoes.

That sounds like an interesting idea and it goes along with things like how keeping things too clean can hinder development of the immune system. Still I'm not going to plan on running without cushioned shoes.

I doubt it's as much about the cushioning as having finer control with exposed toes.
