Ok guys, maybe some people here who travel will be able to help me out.. Wife is about to finish up her MBA, and is determined to take a celebratory vacation. We bought a little promo Cancun vacation package (fully refundable, yay, just in case of course), and it can be used any time in the next year. Question is, with all the trouble in Mexico right now, I am not sure at ALL that I want to set foot anywhere in that country, even in one of their 'resort' destinations. Anybody here have any more direct knowledge of how things are in places like Cancun? The last thing I want to do is bring my wife and son into a dangerous situation. Anybody? Thanks
we're going to cozumel next month and we're not worried about it. we just won't go off the resort at all.
I was there last week and everything seemed perfectly safe. If you're staying in the hotel zone and around lots of people, especially tourists, you should be fine. It is a crazy situation down there though and you can always end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you're smart about it you can limit the chances of that happening. If you're really that worried about it there's always other places to go in the Caribbean for vacations. Being worried the whole time you're somewhere could detract from the overall trip, which would defeat the purpose of it.
Going to Cancun would actually take you further away from the troubled areas near the border than staying in Houston. Of course you should look up what the State Dept says and if you still feel uncomfortable, even though everybody assures you its safe, what's the point of going if you will be nervous during your vacation? Refund it and go somewhere else.
The problem areas are border cities like Juarez and Tijuana, and of course the state of Sinaloa and the region b/w Sinaloa and the US (Durango, Coahuila). Cancun is safe - it's well out of the way of the narco's turf
We're thinking of going (Isla Mujeres, right off Cancun Coast) in a couple of months, and have the same concerns, somewhat greater in the sense it's less populated, somewhat less in that it's more isolated. I know it's mostly border related where all the trouble has been, but more and more reports are talking about it spilling into other areas, and Cancun has been mentioned a couple of times. that said, most reports say what others here are saying, just be smart, and if you're in the resort areas and not wandering alone in the middle of the night, you should be ok. Still, I was planning on taking kids, and like others also said, if you have to worry about crime the whole time you're there, takes a bit away from being on "vacation." We're still undecided.
it's really the border towns, as has been mentioned, that is any cause for concern. the whole yucatan penninsula is one of the safest parts of mexico.
You should be okay. The drug cartels are not targeting tourists but a tourist can be in the wrong place at the wrong time so just stay on the resort.
I do not think it is a big problem. We (wife, 2 kids, and me) are going to Akumal in June, which involves driving a rental car 75 minutes from Cancun. We have been going there for years and we have not experienced any problems other than a shakedown by police on the highway for supposedly speeding. I would be worried about the border areas.
