Is It a Wise Decision to Save Cap Room for Webber?

I figured this would be an interesting topic for people that like to plan for the future. What does everyone think about this, is it a risk worth taking in hopes of landing Webber in 2001? Assuming Cuttino Mobley re-signs, to save up cap room for Webber, the Rockets would have to do the following:

    1. Unload Walt Williams b/c of his hefty contract which jumps to 6.35 mil in the summer of 2001.

    2. Not use the 4.5 mil trade exception as it would eat up space saved for 2001. Thus, if any player like Austin Croshere or Danny Fortson were willing to play for it, the Rockets would have to pass in order to have sufficient cap room for 2001 for Webber.

Would you be willing to do this in hopes of signing Webber? The potential payoffs are huge, but it does involve a good amount of risk. The Rockets will have to free up approximately 12 mil in cap space that summer as the max salary for Webber is projected to be 30% of the 40 mil cap which is 12 mil.

To me it is not logical to forego current improvements on the off-chance that some marginally desireable talent my surprise us and come here.

If we can't rope in Rashard Lewis, why would Webber want to come here? Maybe he and Jalen Rose want to reunite in The Motor City; they coupled with Grant Hill and Stackhouse would make a formidable team. Woe to the capologists!

RR-If we had 5 million of cap room, I'd bet we could sign Lewis....

Nope it is not a wise decision becuz we dont even know whether WEbb's gonna come here or not. I think we shouldnt really worry about Webber or whoever, just take it 1 season at a time.

It probably shouldnt be a question of whether or not we should be saving money fro Webber in particular, or whether or not we should be trying to save at all. By this I mean, I don't think any team, but especially a rebuilding lottery team, should be throwing excess money or paying above value. By this I mean that I feel like we are overpaying both Walt Williams and KElvin Cato and at least one of their contracts has to go unless there is major improvement. For a team in the playoffs stuggling for that championship, you can afford to overpay somebody if it means possibly adding veteran leadership or that last piece you need. But here, in our case, I think each of these points should be looked at seperately.

    1) Yes, I think Walt Williams shoudl be traded. Of the 2 (Cato and Williams) I think Cato has more potential. I wouldnt be tto disappointed though if Cato was traded (as when Walt was playing well we were winning) or if even both were traded. The Rockets need to stop paying out money where money isnt due (think Matt Maloney)

    2) The Rockets need to decide if they can get good value for their 4.5 mil. Do they feel Croshere is worth it (or the even higher price he may be asking). Can he compete day in and out with the Western conference PF's and SF's and will this move pay off in and of itself. The same situation can be assesed for Fortson or others. My personal opinion is the Rockets shouldnt trade for Croshere. WHile I do think he will be worth the 4.5 mil, I think so many teams will be after him that the asking price will go way up (an interesting scenario however would be a trade involving either Cato or Williams for Croshere--that could benefit the team doubly)

Should the Rockets organization look to the future? Certainly, but never with the assumption of if we have this money we will do this or he will come here. I think now is an imperative time for the organization. Smart business and basketball decisions MUST be made. Otherwise, the team may became one of the many CONSTANTLY stuck in the rebuilding process (ala Vancouver or Denver or Golden State)

vancouver isn't rebuilding. They are still trying to build. My view has always been that until you make the playoffs or come really close, you are an expansion team.

How close will the rockets be to the salary cap?
