I'm posing that question because just like this summer, I knew YI was a goner. I listened to the incoming gm with the addition of skiles as a coach and he said then they need more scrappy, tougher guys on the frontline. I think the Rox lack versitility and size on the frontline. Once I thought about it, I started watching the Bucks and even pulled some older games off the dvr and thought about a trade scenerio.

The upside/emergence of landry and the absesnce of deke brings me to this idea of a trade. I know DD and many others will probably disagree, but disagreement is always good conversation. I'm always looking at the team on the top in the west and to me, that LA. Right now, they have too many matchups the rox can't overcome. Their size and length will always be a problem until we do something to combat them. Gasol and Odom are the 2 that will always give us fits. They will be more capable to handle Odom once Battier comes back, but the Gasol deal isn't going away. He's too big for Scola and too quick for Yao. Here is my idea.

    Scola-3.1m
    Hayes-1.9m
    Head-1.9m

    for

    Villunueva-3.4m
    Elson-1.7m
    Allen-1.3m

I know the fact that Charlie has gotten off to a slow start shooting. Allen and elson are bench players. I also realize Scola is a hard playing guy who maximize his talent, as is hayes being the best position defender on the squad, head is, well head. When I really put it together, I think it would be beneficial to both teams.

Scola and Hayes are "skiles" type of players. That's not to say adelman don't like them, but skiles likes the real gritty, grimy limited types. I'm not saying its anything wrong with that, that's just kinda matter a factly. Scola can play in 4 and be in rotation with Bogut and Gadzuric. Hayes will be another hustle guy to get loose balls for jefferson and redd while providing some defensive post play. Head adds to their shooting or rots on the benchh like he's doing now.

Now the hard part, selling charlie v. The guy is very talented, multi tool guy. He's a lamar odom type with some of those same skills. He hasn't playing all the way to his skillset all the time. His youth, atheleticism and skillset in the offense is really intriguing. He's a guy especially made for LA because you can start Landry and bring him off the bench as a 6'11 guy who can put the ball on the floor and finish. Even with him not hitting his ceiling, he still grabs 7 rebs a game. The other throw in parts really makes it interestin also. Malick Allen is a 6'10 who is a quality backup at either 4/5. He has a nice midrange shot, plays very hard and is a good lockeroom guy. Elson is a 7ft er that has played pretty good when given minutes in denver and sa when given time. He's versitile enough to also play the 4/5 as he did alongside Nene and Duncan. He can play against Gasol with his length or play against traditional centers in relief of Yao if need be. Its typical Leebigez, but I don't post or speak before doing my research. I'm not saying Morey is looking at it, I'm just saying it would intrigue me a lot if I was looking at the rox objectively.

    C'mon DD, I know you're coming! ;)

I like it. Elson was one of my top free agent targets back in the offseason plus Charlie V would be a nice replacement for Scola and fit into the Adelman and he still can develop. I'm skeptical though, Scola's recent play has impressed me pleasantly.

However, this is a deal worth exploring, Morey I hope you're reading this.

    leebigez, don't even try it.

Everyone here is just gonna tell you how much height and athleticism isn't important.

I wouldn't give up both Scola and Chuck for Charlie V., though. We'd lose too much on defense. I don't think Chuck is the type of player you ever trade. He works well with us and we probably value him more than any other team. There aren't many teams that feel they need a 6'6 "big".

wow, i really like this idea, i would hate to see scola go, and chuck as well because i think chuck's defensive skills and rebounding is underrated, but that's alotttt of size. doubt we'll make that big of a trade though, i only see minor things happening : /

I would do Fransisco Elson for Luther Head in a heartbeat, but I would have a hard time trading Scola. Hayes is valuable to the team as a situational stopper especially come playoff time. I do like the thinking though. I wonder if the Nets would entertain a Sean Williams for Luther Head and change?

We're not trading Scola or Landry because we can't afford to, maybe Head and some other players but not Scola....he's one crafty mother...

My main problem with this scenario. The above sounds as if Charlie typically is a good shooter, which he isn't. He's just doing worse than his normal bad for a PF shooting. And that's even considering he is more of a "shooting" PF.

Basically, Charlie V. is still just an average player at best. He shoots poorly, and a lot. He's attempted 17 FG's in 3 of their 7 games...and he's only averaging 22 mpg.

He is rebounding a lot better this year, and you can't teach 6'11, but Scola thus far is shooting better, scoring more and rebounding more, in just barely a few more minutes per game.

I know nothing about Charlie V.'s defense, but just going by his demeanor and his shot first ask questions later style, my guess would be he doesn't pride himself on the defensive end...heck, that'd be why Scott Skiles would be getting rid of him.

So I just don't see any real improvement from that trade, unless there are salary implications I'm aware of. I wonder how Miami feels about Haslem...he's always been a PF I thought would be great with Yao

Y'all overrated the hell out of Villanueva. Tim Thomas or Maurice Taylor can score in bunches as well while doing little else.

elson I want, and have intimated that for quite some time now. long, athletic, been on successful team before (spurs), and at least tries to play defense.

charlie v I could do without. he has a bad paint allergy and doesn't shoot well enough from the outside to offset his painted aversion. basically, he's flat in the front.

    malick allen? meh. I guess.

I think we would have to do this deal if the Bucks were interested. I like Scola and Hayes but we have a midget frontcourt. We are also a relatively slow and unathletic team. If you are slow you better be big. Slow and short gets you nowhere.

We would get a 6'10, a 6'11 and a 7'0 player to address our serious need for frontcourt length.

Villanueva is athletic, versatile offensively and a solid rebounder.

Adding these 3 guys gives us multiple combinations to counter the Lakers with. You can put Yao and Elson out there to counter Bynum/Gasol.

Yao and Villanueva would be a nice counter if they had Bynum/Odom in the frontcourt.

Against Gasol/Odom, we could go with Elson and Villanueva and sit Yao.

Allen is a gritty player with legit size at 6'10 who has played under some good defensive coaches.

I think this would be a great deal for the Rockets.

That's fair, but I'm not looking at the shot attmpts as much as I'm looking at how we will be able to get past a team like LA. I think the trade I suggested allows us more flexibility and versitility vs that team. I'm never one to overreact to any game because I've been thinking about the matchup for awhile. Part of defense is not only heart, hustle, and awarness, but also having guys that can defend their position with quickness to the ball and size. I will tell you that Hayes is a very good post positional defender, but the effort he has to put in to hold guys off, then go get the ball or even contest shots makes what he do even more amazing. When it comes down to it though, taller guys can just get into position and jump over him. Scola is the same way because he's not as strong or long either. He plays with great effort, but when playing against those long atheletic types, he's regulated to shootin jumpers and having problems defending and scoring around the paint. I like the Charlie V trade because of Odom. When Odom comes is with his size ,ballhandling and quickness is too much for anyone on our bench presently. I also like the fact that with that trade and we play Utah, Boozer has to guard a guy on the perimeter that can blow by him. Also having both Allen and Elson gives the Rox options off the bench as backups to Yao. Not only that, when we play the Aldridge and the O'Neal/Bosh combo, we will have guys tall and agile enough to contest those guys from a quickness pov.

    leebigez,

Aside from this trade, which I would do, what do you think about Scola + Head for Bargnani, assuming the Raptors were interested?

Bargnani may not be the best finisher in the paint but he is a 7'er capable of playing alongside Yao. He is a strong shotblocker, good rebounder and very good shooter. I'm not sure how much he would help against the Lakers but I think he would be a terrific answer for the Jazz. He would nullify Okur for once.

I think he may also be able to do better against Gasol than any of our midget PFs.

i would be allright with trading just head or hayes straight up for elson, preferably hayes, i like elson´s game, i realize that he got confused a lot playing spurs defense but it seems to be a quite complicated defense system as many players fail to master it.

If we can go on a head for elson trade that would be awsome.

What i would love to do is to put a Alston-Mcgrady or Alston-Artest (or Brooks-TMac or Brooks-Artest if needed) and get a top tier PG, i think that´s it what this team lacks.

If Artest plus any scrub get us a player like devin harris i would be delighted.

Of course that if we do a Alson-Artest deal for a premier PG i would be very excited but i don´t see that happening.

I don´t think we need a all great pg but at least someone who can pass and score eventually, Alston is a PG that secures the ball and that´s it. I don´t see rafer gaining last years level sadly.

Sadly brooksball the raptors are very crowded at PF-C right now so i don´t see that happening, they are in much need of a SF so you would need to offer something on that category, artest, battier maybe... Some package including Battier and Barry may work but we are giving away 2 of our top 3 point shooters. Again i think it is more of a pg problem than anything else, T-Mac is so valuable for the rockets (when he wants to play) because we have no PG at all, Alston just carries the ball and brooks is more of a parker type of PG than a "natural" point.

BrooksBall- I've watched Bargiani 3 times this year and he still seems a little lost. He's kinda in between being Dirk or Radmanovich. He shows flashes, but I don't think they're ready to get rid of him. I could be wrong, but I think being #1 overral gives you a lot of rope. Trading for O'Neal was a wake up call because he can't play sf.

Obivously if you can do this trade you it. Hell, I'd trade Landry or Battier and a draft pick for Bargnani straight up. Bargnani is misused in Toronto, he's being asked to bang around inside when its obvious to everyone but Sam Mitchell that he should be used Dirk-style. Personally I think he'd fit under the Addleman offense since he can launch mid range jumpers all day long, giving Yao the space he needs to work his magic inside. Or maybe you can sell him to Nellie as Dirk 2.0 for Biedrins or Brendan Wright :p Now those guys would be perfect beside Yao :D

Yea, I heard that Colangelo is still bullish on Bargnani and I hear you about his inconsistency. At the same time, I think he would be a terrific answer for the Jazz frontcourt that kills us over and over again.

I also like his size and he has shown to be a good rebounder and shotblocker. He is also an incredible shooter for his size, similar to Dirk as you pointed out. I don't know much about his passing skills but he may do well playing in the high post under Adelman.

Basically, his size and his potential as well as his ability to play PF/C, i.e., with Yao or as his backup intrigues me. He is also a much better defensive player than I think the average fan realizes.

I guess his inconsistency and the fact that the Raptors don't seem to be interested in moving him make it a bad idea. He still has huge potential as far as I can see and could end up being a more complete player than Dirk given some of the early signs with his defense.

    leeb,

hmm. you've convinced me on the scola + for charlie v, elson + trade.

    BrooksBall,

    in a heartbeat.

imo, landry has more upside than scola and can give us just as much, if not more, production this year. ultimately, we do need more length in the frontcourt and no amount of hustle will change that.

even though a ken doll has more balls than charlie v, the versatility he would give us intrigues me. he would back up carl, and when hot, stretch the defense. and it's not like scola's a lockdown defender. taller pfs shoot right over him. at least villanueva's a taller broomstick to launch over.
