With the drafting of Ming, the development of Griffin, the maturing of Mobley, the return of Taylor and Rice, and the addition of Boki; is Francis still the go to guy? Does the support for the Rockets have enough offense to allow Steve to get 10 to 12 assists a game. Because in his first season, Francis was passing the ball to the right people, they just weren't scoring. I hope Griffin has truly developed an inside game. The in my opinion will allow Francis to play a truer point guard position.
I don't know what BBS you've been reading, but Mobley has been the GoTo man in the 4th quarter, and that infuriates people. Mobley has been the goto guy, because he has a simpler last minute move. Francis gets too frantic. He does. Rudy just started getting the ball into Francis's hands in the last minute this year...and to mixed results. Even his successful plays are busted plays. Many of Mobley's most memorable failures were preceded by a frantic possession by Francis where we didn't even get a shot off.
i think mobley has been the biggest go to guy in the fourth quarter, but francis will always be an option.
I think Yao ming has a good chance to be a Go To Man. He has higher field goal percentage and height advantage. In my opinion, he mite be the Go To Man.
this is still steves team and he will remain the Go To Guy. that doesnt mean he will be the first option. he will start the game but getting his teamates involved, like a good PG should. if we need him to score he will step up. we will see nights where steve has 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 12 assists. then we will see other nights where steve has 32 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Cat's the goto guy. We're also under .500 when he is though. It doesn't infuriate me when he is, bt I do wish he would give up the rock sometimes. I know I'm in the minority and it may be a moot point. Steve may be as good as gone and that makes some of you happy.
gr8-1, I think it's worth pointing out (as it has been more than once) that that statistic is skewed by the fifteen-game losing streak where Steve was out and Cuttino was playing injured (which applies to the season as well.)
Well, you'd think we'd want the highest percentage play the defense will allow. We didn't have a high percentage inside option last year, so that left us with Cat, Mooch or Steve's last second heave. I'd hope that this year we can spread the defense a little better and get a more profitable position. With the caveat that he hasn't played a game - you'd think it might well be 7'6", 70%-shooting Yao Ming, from the high post. That seems like a pretty good option. If he draws the double (and wouldn't that be nice in the first year!), then who's the best shooting perimeter threat with a good look? Who can create their own seperation? Can Griffin get a reliable, high-percentage, go-to move or shooting spot on the floor (dreamshake)? It's possible that we could get picks for Cat or Steve to take a clutch shot - but that's not been part of our game so far.
Obviously, defensive matchups will dictate who the go to guy will be as well as the shot clock, but I can't think of anyone else who should be fed the rock in crunchtime outside of Stevie Francise, but man, the alternatives and variables (barring injuries) are numerous on this club as it is now, but I'll say this; Glen Rice has the rep as a money shooter, but his tendancy to be streaky would exclude him as being the "go to" guy on a regular basis, but I think Rudy would have to milk him if he were in the zone late in the fourth quarter, provided we could help him get his shot off with screens and picks. Your go to guy would have to have the ability to create his own shot and as a few posters have mentioned, Cat does have this aspect to his game and has no conscious as far as shouldering the responsibility for taking the most crucial of shots-your go to guy has got to be cold blooded and I think Cat and Stevie would both fit that description.
When was he ever the go-to guy? Until he grows something between his legs, he will be a 2nd tier player. Steve "Franchise" my ass.
At this time, Mobley and Francis are far and away our best offensive players. One or the other should be the go to guy. Based on last season, I would give the nod to Mobley, but that may change if Steve is healthy. Our other players are just not at their level at this time . Eddie and Ming have potential to be go to type players, but that will be in the future, not this season.
My opinion, if we're ever going to be a contendor, Steve needs to realize that he is the go-to guy. Whether it be scoring, making the defensive play, or giving out the assist, he needs the ball in his hand almost every time down the stretch. Until that is established, we won't win more than 35 - 40 games a season.
