Apparently it's being reviewed, but he has been offered 7 years at 102 mil. He made 8.4 mil. last year, and that's a pretty hefty pay raise. I think Finley is a very gifted athlete and good player, but does he deserve franchise money? Hmmmmm..... It is admirable though, that he took the long term deal now, instead of taking a one year deal for around 11 mil. and then gone for the 7 year 120 mil. max the next. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news/ap/20010720/ap-mavericks-finley.html Finley's agent reviewing seven-year, $102 million deal from Mavs July 20, 2001 DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks have formally offered two-time NBA All-Star Michael Finley a seven-year, $102 million contract. Finley's agent, Henry Thomas, told The Dallas Morning News that he received the contract from the Mavericks and was reviewing it. He expects the contract to be signed within a few days. ``At the latest, Monday,'' Thomas said. The deal is for the maximum length and amount allowed under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban isn't concerned about the delay. ``It's not a question of terms,'' Cuban said. ``Just his people getting through the details.'' Finley became a free agent when he opted out of his contract after last season. By doing so, Finley will get a hefty pay raise after making about $8.4 million last season. Finley could have opted for a one-year deal at just under $11 million, which would have enabled him to receive a contract for seven years and $120 million next summer. But the 6-foot-7 Finley will apparently take the long-term deal now. Last season, Finley made the NBA All-Star team for the second straight season and helped the Mavericks to a 53-29 record, their best since 1988. After overcoming a 2-0 deficit to win a best-of-5 series against Utah in the opening round of the playoffs, Dallas lost to San Antonio in the second round. For the second time in three seasons, Finley led the NBA in minutes played (42 per game). He was the team's second-leading scorer at 21.5 points and also averaged 5.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists. After being selected by Phoenix in the first round of the 1995 NBA draft, Finley was traded to Dallas on Dec. 26, 1996. Jason Kidd went from the Mavs to Phoenix. ------------------ My doctor says I am bipolar. I am going to get a second opinion. I have never had intimate desires for polar bears.
Finley is an all star, but he definitely is not a franchise player! I guess he does deserve the money though. There are alot of crap players who make millions and millions of dollars and Finley is definitely way above those guys. ------------------
It's not like Cuban cares how much he pays Finley. Value is not the point, the point is that he wants him to stay in Dallas. ------------------
Finley is one of my favorite players. Along with Eddie Jones I think he is the most underrated player in the league, and possibly the best defensive 2-guard next to Jones, and he is an all-star, and a go-to guy, and I think he will have a Joe Dumars like Hall-of-Fame career, where people don't realize he is a Hall-of-Famer until they review the stats. With that being said, I don't think he deserves franchise money, but I wouldn't argue him getting it because he is on a team that is loaded, and his contract won't hurt them since they have everything they need. ------------------ "Instruments are like women: After a while, you want to make love to another." - Nicolas Godin of the musical duo Air
I'd rather give Finley $100mil than Allan Houston. ------------------ Homer Simpson: "I'm gonna tell you 3 things that will haunt you for the rest of your life! You've ruined your father, crippled your family, and baldness is hereditary!"
