Quite frankly, I am amazed by how many of you educated basket lovers feel that Eddie is a good defender at the PF spot. Just because a player blocks shots does not translate to being a good defensive player.

In man cases, guys who block shots take UNNECESSARY gambles. Most coaches actually say it is better to stay on the ground and just put your hands up and not go for pump fakes etc. Eddie throughout his career has continued to take gambles and albeit, sometimes he gets a block but there are many other times where the offensive player gets a EASY basket, draws a foul on Eddie or draws a foul on another player (Yao, Cato) because of Eddie being out of position.

If you think about some of the great defensive PFs, many do not block alot of shots but play physical positional defense such as our very own Otis Thorpe in the 90s. Others that I can think of off the top of my head include Buck Williams, Karl Malone, AC Green when he was young, Charles Oakley etc.

Hakeem is the alltime shot block leader. Did that make him any worse of a defender?

    Good thread topic.

It drives me crazy to no end every time I see someone make a post like, "We should start Eddie because of his defense!" And it just happens far too often to correct. EG is a terrible man-to-man defender. Blocks and rebounds do not equal defense. MoT has always (and probably always will be) a better defender than Eggie.

I really don't think it's going to matter either way...

    Yeah, exactly.

I can say precisely that Eddie is, at this moment, not any kind of defender, and he is not a power forward or any other position.

I'll say no since it's hard defending while on the living room couch.

Maybe. Maybe not. It all depends.
