Is Daniel Theis' contract a positive asset?

This is not a criticism of Daniel Theis' play. But based on his play, is his four-year, $36 million deal easily moveable?

The fourth year is a team option, but one of the things that really surprised me was that Stone gave up some of that 2023 space by giving Theis a guaranteed third year.

It's not a big deal so long as his contract is a good value and can be easily moved when the time comes. That was my way of accepting it at the time.

$9 million annually isn't a fortune by NBA standards but it does go until 2024. I'm curious... do you think it's a positive asset if it was to be shopped right now?

I won't lie, when he came I thought he could be a good mentor for Sengun, especially defensively. But right now it seems like Sengun should be his mentor.

No, honestly he never should have been signed. But idk...whatever, we have to get value back for him now. And make no mistake he is better than Sengun on defense(not that I agree with him playing over Sengum) but we need to get our vets minutes and get them traded.

I think he honestly could be a decent energy guy on a contender (just not too many minutes).

But his fit here is off to me because there are clearly better, younger players who need more time and for whatever reason our coaching staff limits their minutes in favor of his.

So while I do believe Theis has value somewhere, his value sure isn't showing here.

If we needed to trade him I think his salary isn't too ridiculous, though.

Not this season but next year and the year after it will. Unless he completely falls off, there are always teams at the deadline looking to add a big.

Not right now clearly. Attach him to EG or Wood in a trade.

Tough to say….. Like most of the “vets” on the Rockets, they are trying their hand a little too much on offense. However, when he sticks to setting screens, moving the ball, rebounding, and defense he’s absolutely fine.

Sengun could be a mentor to any of the rockets players and half the NBA

Theis would contribute more on a contender doing the dirty work. He really depends on others to make things happen on offense, and we have no initiators.

I think his contract is neutral, every team needs a vet that can do all the blue collar stuff, shoot the occasional 3 etc.

Theiss in my opinion has positive value on a Playoff team that needs a scrappy big that can roll to the basket. I am sure Stone will get calls for him once Dec. 15th roles around. With Patrick Williams having injury issues I would not be shocked if the Bulls want him back. We might even be able to flip Theiss for Bagley. Bagley is the type of player the Rockets should take a flyer one. Sac has buried him on the bench and his agent is livid.

I thought Olynik was a better fit

Kelly Olynyk signed a 3 year / $37,195,122 contract with the Detroit Pistons, including $28,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $12,398,374.

How much did we really save??

EG + Theiss is a perfect trade for a team like the Lakers. Gordon gives them much needed floor spacing and scoring, and Theiss would probably be the best center available for the Lakers since he can also stretch the floor (though not reliably).

Rockets could probably look to take back a future unprotected first rounder for a trade like this with a playoff team.

Theis - strong defender, great rotations, can switch, some range, competent roll man, ok rebounder

Good replacement for Ryan Anderson. Will slot in nicely next to James
    .

Let's pull the trigger and sign him

Lakers. If they can roll out 3 centers, LBJ, AD and Russ, it really stresses the defense.

I Know the math is against them - but it's the Lakers, if anyone can solve the challenge of making a 6 man starting 5 work, it's LeBron.

Shrewd move by Stonetitta to block it before it could happen.

Theis isn’t a bad player, but he isn’t what the Rockets need either. They would have been much better off leaving Wood at center and spending that money on a PG or a better stretch 4. Theis and Wood just don’t pair well together, either one would be better off without the other. The emergence of Sengun makes him all the more unnecessary. One of either Wood or Theis needs to be traded. I think Theis is a positive asset, but you’d get way more in return for Christian Wood.
