Dude Im just not too sure about this trade at all. I think the Mavs could have used a tougher guy to grab some boards, not another body who plays soft D and can score (see Mo Taylor). Can you imagine the look on Jordan's face when he finally bribed someone to take on Howard's ludicrous contract??? ------------------ "Chucky who?" Charles Barkley
Well Mo Taylor scored about 18 points and about 8 rebounds for the past 2 months so I will take that. And Howard is a legit scoring option, who can rebound and he is a decent defender. I think it was a great trade for the Mavs. ------------------ Dream a deadly Dream. . .
The mavs definitely picked up more than they lost. Howard will be a good addition to the team, and he will probably play better than he has in recent years because there won't be as much pressure to be the man in dallas. ------------------
Wiz were the clear winners in my mind. They dumped Howard's ridiculous contract and got good young players to help in the rebuilding process. I like both Alexander and Thomas, even though he's on the IL, and even Hubert Davis brings a nice shot off the bench. ------------------
I like this trade - 1) It allows Finley and Nowitzki to move back to their natural positions. 2) Howard is Finley's best friend. So when Finley opts out this year, the Mavs have an even greater chance of resigning Finley, even though Finley resigning was almost a done deal. 3) How does Howard's contract match up with what C-Webb could recieve in the offseason? ------------------ The Rockets will be the NBA champions. Believe.
It is slightly more than what Webber could get I think. I didn't know they were best friends. Are you sure about that? Because I don't see any connections between the two. ------------------
They're probably friends through meetings on the court and hanging out before and after games, and in event and stuff off the court. Think about it, Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan are the best of friends, and actually didn't have any true connections. ------------------ Dream a deadly Dream. . .
When you take out the money part of the equation (which isn't an issue to Cuban), Dallas came out REALLY well. They were also able to pick up a nice backup center in Booth, who can block some shots. Washington came away with murder. 2 young guys with cheap contracts and high potentials (Alexander and Thomas), a nice shooting backup SG, and 2 cap fillers Laettner and Vaught, who don't have really bad contracts (Laettner's goes out this year, and I think Vaught has 2 more years). I'm somewhat surprised that they didn't move Richmond, a guy they don't want anyway, for cheap. They now have 4 natural SGs that all deserve minutes (Richmond, Hamilton, Davis, Alexander). IMO, Washington now will likely go for a young PG with Richmond/Strickland as the bait this summer, as they now have several offensive minded SGs, and a tough defensive tandem up front in Jahidi White and Etan Thomas next year. ------------------ The Serious Police are watching. Follow the rules or be assimilated. Shandon is underrated.
Thought this was interesting... Washington Post article: * A source with knowledge said the Mavericks plan to re-sign Booth, possibly for more than $4 million per season. If Booth does not re-sign with the Mavericks, the Wizards could try to bring him back with the league-average exception granted to teams that are over the salary cap. * With Juwan Howard on the books, we already knew Dallas didn't have much of a shot in the Webber sweepstakes, and I think this supports that. Real GM has Dallas at $43 million next year. ------------------
I read an interview with Finley where he said he is closer to Howard than anyone else in the league and thus he was asked his opinion and gave the trade the thumbs up etc... Great trade for the Mavs. They were over the cap for years to come anyway and this will help keep Finely. Not to mention one thing people always forget with these massive contracts...that they are bad up until the FINAL year. In two years time, any team looking to clear $20 million off it's roster will be begging for the chance to take on the last year of his contract etc and thus he will have value again. ------------------
The connection between howard and finley could be that they're both from the chicago area, and they probably played against or with each other when they were in high school. ------------------
Problem with that is most of the trade offers would involve other underachieving players with huge contracts like Big Country. ------------------
The Finley-Howard connection goes way back to high school, where they played against each other, same goes for college ball. They also played in summer leagues together, and they work out in the offseason together due to having the same personal trainer. I heard today from a source close to the MAVS (he used to play for them) that they actually got Howard (in addition to wanting his skills) to lure Webber there in the offseason. Interesting, no???? ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
Having Howard's huge contract might actually hurt Dallas' chance of getting webber this summer. ------------------
I don't get it. How are you going to lure Webber with Juwan Howard? As trade bait? Because if not, it seems awfully silly to trade for a $18 million backup PF... ------------------
They are both from the Chicago area. Both played High School ball at the same time. And Howard was at Finely's Birthday party this year. Not only that but Howard mentioned that Finely was his best freind in the NBA. A big deal has been made about it by the media here in Dallas. ------------------
I agree about Alaxander, he can really shoot. But I am not sure about Thomas he has been hid on Injured Reserve all year with a strained big toe. He just could not make the active roster, having to watch Eduardo Najarah get minutes. I am curious to see how he plays. ------------------
Sign and trade...that's the only way they could get Webber now after taking on Howard's contract. I don't see it happening, but that is just what I heard. Howard would eventaully end up playing SF I am sure. I don't think they would ever bench him. ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
I just thought it would be interesting to dig this up, considering how that Howard trade has really blown up in Dallas' face. What did he put up on CWebber over the weekend, 32pts. and 12rebs.? And with the young talent at Washington (namely Alexander), it looks like this is going to be one of those rare trades where everyone benefits. ------------------
Certainly helped Dallas, but you can't deny the fact that the Wiz, in my mind, were equally successful. Maybe you wanna look at their records and say "wow, what an impact the new wiz players have made" but that wouldn't be true. It's easy for deep pockets Cuban to take on Howard's contract, but for almost 2 years, it was damn near impossible for Washington to get him off their roster. Let's not forget Thomas hasn't even played. Don't try and tell me the Mavs just screwed the Wiz over on this trade or something. ------------------
