The question is self-explanatory. If you were GM for a team that needed a quarterback, and you had the number one overall pick, would you pick the 24-year-old quarterback from Hawaii with the most amazing stats for a quarterback ever?
I'm sure people never thought Alex Smith would go #1 overall, so I wouldn't shoot it down so quickly. Is it likely? No, because Brian Brohm is a prototypical NFL QB from a well known school and the Falcons should be picking somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 this season.
No...could be a Top 10 pick but the risk of him being just a "system" QB is too high to be #1 overall IMO. Its the same reason why Tech QBs rarely get drafted despite playing in a hard conference and consistently putting up unbelievable numbers.
If systems work why don't more nfl teams implement them. It worked for mike martz why can't it work for others.
the option would work in the NFL, but it leaves the QB so open to huge hits, plus the turnover ratio is high.. so yeah.. high risk high reward is not the NFL style. colt brennan is basically running the david klingler offense, do they even have a running back on their team?
Actually not necessarily, just cause they don't have Michael Vick doesn't mean they can't be good. The key to their success was a good running game, even when they had MV at the helm. They still have Warrick Dunn and upcoming Jerious Norwood to get them a potent rushing attack. Joey Harrrington can just manage a game and not make stupid mistakes (which is not very likely) along with a defense still with a lot of talent with guys like John Abraham and Deangelo Hall then they can still be a contending team.
David Klingler is the most proflic passer ever. 54 TD's in the 1990 season. Colt Brennan needed three more games pass him. Klingler threw 11 TD's against Eastern Washington Univ. Still a record. Also 716 passing yards in a single game-another record.
No, the option would not work in the nfl. Linebackers and even defensive lineman are way too fast as compared to the college game. Quincy Carter tried this a few times around (2003?) and got lit up.
As probably the only person who's going to respond to this thread who has actually seen Colt Brennan play (I used to live in Hawaii and still continue to follow the team after moving away), I have to say that the kid is more than just a system quarterback. He's got incredible touch and accuracy. He can throw pretty much any pass on the money; long balls, outs, slants, screens etc. He's got a pretty quick release, some decent mobility and elusiveness in the pocket, and obvious leadership ability. Is he worth the #1 pick overall? I'm not so sure. He's got a few cons that draft experts will pick apart. He is a bit older after going to prep school for a year, red shirting and staying for his senior year. He'll be 25 when he finally suits up in the NFL. He throws kind of sidearm, and doesn't have prototypical QB size. His arm strength is maybe middle of the pack in NFL terms. I think clearly the best comparison is with Chad Pennington. Chad went to a non-BCS school, has about the same build, is incredibly accurate, and has questionable arm strength. Now I'd say Colt has a better arm than Pennington, but the comparison is still pretty apt. Chad Pennington is pretty good when he's healthy. IMO Colt might not be enough of a slam dunk to go #1 overall, but I think he can play in the league, and is deserving of a first round selection.
He is listed at 6-3 196 which probably means he's 6-1 185. Unless he is Joe Montana that is going to be considered too small/short for the NFL.
