he seems to be a pretty poor rebounder for a 7'5 guy. i dunno just a quick comment because that has certainly been the least impressive part of his game. guys who are generally bad rebounders tend to stay bad rebounders.
I for one am not concerned. He is not the most aggressive rebounder but he can still get 9-10 boards a game just by being 7-5. If the ball bounces off the rim even close to him he has a way better shot of getting the board than anybody else.
Bad rebounder? One of his strengths is rebounding. His only problem is that he needs to learn to box out, and that is a learned art. He'll probably grab 12 to 15 rebounds once Rudy and Co. teach him how to box out. Meanwhile, without the skill of boxing out, he's grabbing like 10 boards a game.
Mr. Mean can definitely help Ming learn about boxing out, and rebounding. I think the reason some guys don't really improve on their rebounding is because like, Mo Taylor they've got a perimeter game to begin with. Ming seems like he doesn't mind going inside, but will need some coaching of the fundementals. I think he will adapt.
Only Ben Wallace has more rebounds on the US team over Ming. Yet Wallace is lower in every other category than Yao. Maybe someone should teach the US F/C to box out. Fact is we don't yet know what kind of numbers Yao will put up in the NBA. Only time will tell.
What's wrong with his rebounding? He's averaging 7.5 rebounds in 26.6 minutes. The only reason the numbers are low is because of his minutes, which can be attributed to lousy coaching. He averaged 19 rebounds per game in the CBA. I don't see any problem.
Foul trouble also... Ming should average around 10-12 boards a game in the NBA, just by size alone. He's not a natural rebounder, or an explosive jumper, but he will get his fair share.
He's big, he's quick (especially for someone his size), and he has good hands. He also has a history of great rebounding #'s. Cat has it right about Yao's minutes and poor coaching. I'm not concerned at all.
Actually Ming's inability of boxing out is a problem that experts say that he will have to learn to do in the NBA. It doesn't matter because, as Cat said he's grabbing like 8 rebounds at a 26 minute clip.
I'm not concerned till he starts to play for the Rockets and shows what he can really do, then I will critique...
Right now it seems that Ming subscribes to the Mo Taylor school of rebounding. Some will take that the wrong way, but it is not meant as an insult, just an observation. Ming seems to put forth the effort in his rebounding attempts, but it is not focused energy. His height alone allows him to rebound more efficiently than Mo Taylor, but he could still do much, much better. Like others have said before me, he does not fully understand the basics behind boxing out and whatnot. As soon as he gets that down, he will be putting his great size to full use and I think we can fully expect 10+ rebounds a game every season.
thank you for the mockery...i like it anyhow...my point being that the times i did see him play he just didnt seem that active around the basket going for rebounds. maybe its cuz i saw him when he was tired and whatnot. it just seemed like he was pushed around a lot for rebounds. i hope he does learn to box out better because that actually does seem to be the bigger problem now that it was pointed out. and im sure that once his upper body strength and stamina increases then these problems will be less pronounced. to the comments that since he is 7'5 then he will get some rebounds then other very tall guys who didnt rebound can be pointed out. then to the comment that he is grabbing 8 boards at 26 min a game...its closer to 25.3 mpg and 7.3 rpg and those stats are pretty much the same as cato's rebounding stats from last year 25.6 mpg 7 rpg. yao's stats are against lesser competition and while you can't pick and choose which stats to use for averages the algeria game certainly helps to bump up his overall stats bigtime. i'm not a yao doubter or anything...i love the fact that we have him and i think he will work through the problems he has since he has the motivation to do it. but this is something that hasnt really been pointed out. people here seem to only mostly be pointing towards yao's lack of physical stamina and strength as his biggest faults now, but this seems to be something that certainly hasnt been impressive, like his shooting and ability to shutdown the middle have been. now yall can tear me up if i sounded completely stupid there.
well shawn has the same height as ming or taller, i dont seen him put up with 10-12 boards a game......... ming aint a bad or good rebounder...
