As some of you know, ive been having alot of trouble with my dell notebook freezing and im thinking about selling it on ebay or whatever. I saw this new notebook at BestBuy......for 450.00 for a compaq M 420 processor with 1024 DDR2 and 80g hdd and cd burner.

I keep hearing so much about this core duo and bestbuy has a toshiba that is core duo with the same specs....but it comes with a dvd burner for 599.99.

My question is.......is core duo REALLY that much better than the 420 processor to shell out an extra 150.00? Also.....is the 450.00 a good price for the M420? I really just want the best laptop for the money and i dont want to spend anymore than 600.00............or can i get a bigger and badder notebook somewhere else online? I need help!

Yes. The core duo is very fast compared to the celeron M since its a dual core processor. It acually has two processors in one chip while the celeron is a watered down pentium processor. There is no comparison. Get the dual core.

I think so but I'm kind of a geek. The Core Duo is essentially 2 steps ahead of the celeron. It kind of like comparing a lexus and Scion. Both are Toyota's but one is the high end and one is the low end.

In practical terms, you Core Duo will probably be at least two times as fast at tasks like ripping movies and such. If all you do is surf the web and write email. It won't make a difference.

One more thing to consider. The new version of windows will probably run like a dog on the celeron but will run just fine on the core duo.

The core duo is definitely worth the 150 dollars. It's basically doubling your processor speed in one chip. Plus the dvd-burner is also really handy.

Spend the extra $150 you will be glad you did. The Celeron is a bit of a dog and the Duo is way better in the long run.

celeron processors are yesterdays crappy news and won't be able to keep up with today's apps...

do youself a favor and "splurge" the extra $150 and get the core duo.

    I agree with the others.

A toshiba with Core 2 duo for $600 is a steal. Make the investment now so it will be a longer wait before having to upgrade.

Depends on what you want to do with your laptop. If all you're doing is surfing the Internet and checking email, and won't be upgrading operating systems every other year or something, who cares.

That being said... I'd splurge... but that's me. :)

Asking a bunch of Internet nerds (AKA us denizens of ClutchCity) whether or not you should pay a bit extra to get better computer hardware is like asking women if you should buy another pair of shoes.

If I had the option, I would wait the 4 months to see how Vista will shake things up.

That's only if you want to run it. XP support will probably outlast whatever laptop you buy.

my suggestion is to check other PC manufacturers like LENOVO (they bought IBM's PC division)

You can get a Lenovo N100 3000 14.1" widescreen core duo starting at $599 and a 15.4" widescreen laptop starting at $649

I own one of these and these laptops are probably the best value out there on the market.
