The Texans are 5-8. Their final three games are @ Tennessee (free fall) @ Denver (disaster) vs Jacksonville (good team, might have division locked up) It is very conceivable that they once again luck out at the end of the season and win their final 3 games to get to "respectability" and finish 8-8. If that happens, is that good enough in your mind for Kubiak to keep his job? Do you think it is good enough for Bob McNair?
With most owners I would say 8-8 at this point in Kubiaks career would get you fired. But Mcnair might be inclined to hold onto him for longer. Which I hope isn't the case. If Cowher linked to the Texans is true you can't let that opportunity slip away.
but there's a lockout coming! we couldn't possibly fire a coach who's accomplished nothing of significance when there could be a lockout!!!
I hope we PASTE the Broncos. That will make those (sucker) Bronco fans want Kubiak even more. And of course I will ALWAYS pull for us to beat the titans. I don't care if it means missing the chance to draft the next Joe Montana.
i used to think that. after this abortion of a season, i hope the titans kill us sunday. i hope kubiak looks so terrible that even with that lockout that prohibits anyone from making coaching changes looming, mcnair has no choice.
I think it depends on a lot of factors beyond the record: the lockout, available (and interested) replacements... I think Bush and the defensive staff are gone. If I had to guess who might go with him, I'd think Smith goes before Kubiak. If Cowher lets it be known he wants the job (and he'll never come right out and say it - but don't think for a second these stories, from a Pittsburgh reporter no less, are random pie-in-the-sky stories; there's a good chance Cowher is behind them)... I just don't know how you can justify keeping Kubiak over Cowher. If, however, the bigger names are not interested, then I think there's a better than 50/50 chance Kubiak will be back at 7-9, 8-8. I'm not saying I agree, but do you can Kubiak for another lower-level, inexperienced assistant?
Honestly if Gruden or Cowher are interested I can Kubiak no matter what. If they aren't, unless we finish 5-11 I probably don't fire him. I strip him of all GM duties, fire Rick Smith, fire every single defensive coach. I see if Bill Parcells wants to come be team president. If he does, he gets the job. If not, I try to poach a personnel guy from the Eagles or Patriots. Then I let whoever is in charge go get whatever defensive personnel they want, even if they want to change to a 3-4. Edit: Ultimately I'd be turning Kubiak into a glorified offensive coordinator. Get another guy to make all executive decisions and get a new coach to be "assistant head coach-defense" with total control over the defense.
Really? And if he proves to be no better than Kubiak you've accomplished... what, exactly? Because here's the thing, and I'm going to go all caps here because it's that important: THEY CANNOT BLOW THEIR NEXT HEAD COACH HIRE. Can. Not. You cannot invest another 2-4 years in a guy that regresses your franchise. If 8-8 becomes "the good ol days," you're so screwed... Because then you have to blow it up all over again - and that's another 2-4 years, and suddenly you're closing in on 20 seasons of perfectly inept football. Sticking with Kubiak and hoping the bad bounces, poor decisions and gamechanging breaks will eventually go your way is a lot safer than turning it over to an unknown, unproven entity. I would rank his options thusly: 1) definitively upgrade your head coach; 2) fire the defensive staff, fire the GM, neuter the head coach, bring in non-pipeline GM and big-name DC; 3) fire Kubiak, replace with Kubiak, Jr.
sounds like a lot of fans are the former. they deserve to have kubiak back so a year from now we're talking about bringing in a new head coach and starting the whole thing over anyway.
By the way ... your 3rd and 4th choices in the poll say exactly the same thing though not many are picking that any way
8-8 is already the good ol days. we've already gone the longest an expansion franchise has ever gone without making the playoffs. we see the same "bad luck" every single year with this coaching staff. i'm not going to be a complete and utter p***y as a fan and stick with the guy you know isn't working after five seasons because i'm afraid that the next coach might not be any better. i mean seriously, what a ****ing sad way of looking at this situation. grow a sac, ric. "insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - albert einstein "quit being such a p***y and settling for what you already know doesn't work." - groogrux has #2 ever worked? has a coach had responsibilities taken away from him and gone on to be successful at the same job? especially five years after taking over the reins and doing squat? and an accomplishment is not going 9-7 if you're sitting home watching the playoffs. why not do all the things in #2 except bring in another coach that isn't the one who hasn't accomplished jack in 5 seasons which is more than most head coaches get to make the playoffs.
