Iraq War Topping $5.8 Billion A Month United Press International November 18, 2004 WASHINGTON - The Pentagon is spending more than $5.8 billion a month on the war in Iraq, according to the military's top generals. That is nearly a 50 percent increase above the $4 billion-a-month benchmark the Pentagon has used to estimate the cost of the war so far. The Army alone is spending $4.7 million a month while the Air Force is spending $800 million a month transporting soldiers and flying combat missions. The Marine Corps is spending $300 million a month, the four service chiefs told the House Armed Services Committee Wednesday. Since 2003, the Pentagon has received some $160 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in supplemental funding -- that is, in addition to its annual budget. It will be requesting another multibillion-dollar supplement early next year to cover the continuing cost of the war. http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,FL_cost_111804,00.html?ESRC=eb.nl
what a staggering number. I was reading some articles on-line about the war and I just don't see how we are every going to get out of there with the place resembling any sort of normal country. I'm almost to the point where I say we just leave.
I don't see how we can rebuild Iraq the same way we helped rebuild europe. The german people didn't hate us the way some of these Muslim extreamists do.
The whole region has no respect for our government and our presence in the area regardless of being a Muslim extremist. Rebuilding is probably going to be ugly. I hope some Arab and European contractors are involved.
We (rather, the Republican controlled Congress) just raised the debt ceiling another 800-plus billion dollars, to allow a national debt of over eight trillion dollars, as a gift to my children and yours. And your grandchildren. And their children and grandchildren. Ain't that just lovely? (Trader_J, don't disappoint me! ) Keep D&D Civil!! And debt free!
In a time of war we all have to make sacrifices. By all I mean everyone unless they make over 200,000 dollars a year. Then they should have it easier while others make sacrifices.
Are you on crack. 5.8 billion a month? $70 billion dollars a year!! You give that money to private scientists and they could have created ANYTHING. Want safety. How about an indestructible dome covering all of America with money left over to beef up domestic police issues. 5.8 billion a month is astronomical.
Who said attacking, invading, overthrowing, occupying and policing a sovereign country unprovoked would be cheap? Our grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren -- who will pick up this tab -- will certainly understand that hundreds of thousands of innocent people had to die. After all, Iraq attacked us first, right? Future generations will know it had nothing to do with the fact that Iraq just happened to have the second-largest oil reserves on the planet. They'll understand that we *had* to pour countless dollars and Americans into the Iraq woodchipper because we had successfully eliminated Al Queda, Osama bin Laden and all other terrorist networks. They'll understand. Victors write the history books, after all.
