You can customize your phone like themes, icons, etc. Add 5 icons on a row, 5 icons on a dock... You can also run programs that were rejected for the App store by Apple. Ex Google Voice. They also have an app called MyWi which turns your phone into a WiFi hotspot to connect devices to.
Worth it for SBSettings (toggle settings on the home screen), and Winterboard (skinning app). Everything else is just a bonus.
SBSettings is the only thing I miss since I reversed the jailbreak on my 3GS. Backgrounder was great, but multi-tasking in IOS 4.0 makes it obsolete. Same with Winterboard, since the only thing I really used it for was separate wallpaper for the lock-screen. The main thing I hated about being jailbroken was the inability to power down and restart my phone. Every time I would, I'd get the lovely USB cable screen: My phone locked up while on vacation in Mexico, and since I was unable to reboot my phone, I had to go without until I returned to my hotel room later that night (luckily, I'd accidentally left blackra1n installed on my laptop). I was less than pleased. Until they fix that, I'm not jailbreaking again. Although, I must admit being tempted to do so, because SBSettings is a really, really, REALLY useful app. Makes me wonder why Apple didn't include something like it in the OS update.
Well the newer jailbreaks like Spirit and the site above are untethered jailbreaks, which allow you to restart your device normally.
Until it doesn't come back on and you all run to my store for help. Yeah, at least a couple of times a week. Best advice I can give: if you don't understand how the jailbreaking process WORKS (and I JUST CLICK BLACKRAIN doesn't count), don't do it.
Too late. It was already SLOW before. I can stand the wait, but if I knew it was better "before" the i4 upgrade, I wouldn't have done it. Meh, not a big deal.
This jailbreak is bad ass... easy to download/install. I think there's a problem with Facetime when you jailbreak your iPhone and I'm waiting for Apple to release iOS 4.1 so they can fix that proximity sensor issue... but other than that I'm glad that I jailbroke this thing. EDIT: They fixed the Facetime issues.
I thought most people Jailbreak their phone so they can use it on another carrier not just apps. It's been widely reported how terrible ATT's service is.
Nope. Jailbreaking means allowing the installation of third-party (i.e. - not Apple approved) apps. Unlocking the phone allows the user to change carriers.
so i went to jailbreakme.com on my iphone 3GS OS 4.0.1 and when i slide the little icon, NOTHING happens. I've seen youtube videos where a download box appears with a status bar. None of that seems to appear when i slide it. I've tried disabling pop ups and everything. Can anybody help?
I think a lot of "ATT has terrible service" has to do with the fact that their networks are overrun by the iPhones and all the data each user uses. Hopefully, if the phone ever goes to another carrier, it will clear up some of that congestion. D-lite, perhaps you can try the alternate site: http://jailbreakme.modmyi.com -- or, reboot your phone and try again.
For some reason, I always thought the iphone had multitasking. I mean, I use to have this old ass big windows mobile phone that did it so I guess I expected everything else to have multitasking. Congrats iphone users on joining in on the beauty of multitasking.
