Any of you actuaries ? If so I have an interview with the state of CA teacher retirement system as an actuary analyst. I do not have prior actuary experience so i am a bit intimidated. My background is in management information science so i presume they think i can be trained for the position. Some of the questions I had were.... How do you guys actually attain the data that you will analyze? What type of statistical methods and or programs should i have an understanding of? What is a good website that will help me in the interview process? Any other advice and or tips will be greatly appreciated. I have a few days to prepare and i really would love to work for this department.
Most people finish the first and second actuarial exams before applying for an actuarial job. Some people stop taking the exams once they have a job and others finish all 8(?) so they can demand more money. I have never met anyone who has been accepted for an actuarial position without passing the first exam (the hardest of the exams iirc)
The exams only get harder if you go along. The amount of exams varies depending on what track you choose. Also after the preliminaries they are different depending on if you go SOA or CAS route.
