I have noticed alot of people on other sites talking about downloading songs etc.. from the net. But instead of WinMx, or Kazaa, or Bearshare, they are talking about things I cant figure out. They post places that you can download something from but I am wondering what this is, and HOW do you get there to download? alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.2000s Might sound stupid but I tried to copy and paste it to the address bar and got nothing. I have seen this type of thing for quite awhile now but have never figured it out. Anyone know? Thanks!
I am not a huge expert on this, but I think it is Usenet groups. You can use a mail client like Outlook Express to subscribe to these groups and download the post. You need a news server though, your ISP should have one. They usually don't have too much to offer, but if you find a good one let me know. You can also get pretty good stuff from IRC. If you go to the right channels. x34 probably knows more about this... edit: drapg - yeah we were close, I must have had a few seconds on you though to get placed first?
That is a newsgroup address. You have to use a news server (either provided by your ISP or use a public server available all over the Internet) to access that particular newsgroup. edit - i guess we posted at the exact same time Sonny I use a public one, b/c RR's CS wouldn't tell me whether or not they provided one... actually to quote the guy on the phone "I don't know"... great CS, huh?
1) Yes, it's a Usenet newsgroup. 2) Yes, Most ISP's have their own NNTP server you connect to. 3) Yes, apps like WinMX/Morpheus/Grokster are easier to use. 4) Binary files like mp3s appear as multi-part messages that must be decoded by your newsreader or some other standalone utility. Your adventure is just beginning...
ok... I have the same question sort of... a lot of folks say they dl stuff from USENET or MIRC... but if I download an 800KB file from USENET, how do you decode it? It's usually all jumbled and in some sort of code... How do you download off of MIRC?? does anyone know of a guide or how-to?
Usenet : Multi-part binary files are "UUencoded". This means they basically take a binary file like an exe, an mp3, etc. and encode it into text. This is the gobbledy-gook that you see in your newsreader. You can use a newsreader that unencodes the file or you can use a standalone unencoder to convert it back from the crazy text messages into a file again. Use something like Forte's Agent or the one I use (which is now defunct), Microplanet Gravity. IRC : you initiate transfers of files between users using DCC (check the help). Fire me an email... I'll come on chat later and show you an example of how to initiate a dcc transfer between people if you want.
DUDE, Looks like the others have pretty much answered your question already... Just make sure to get a newsreader that supports yEnc (another encoding scheme that's more efficient than UUEncode), since that's what more and more posters are using. Outlook Express doesn't support it, but the two best ones, Agent and NewsBin Pro, do. Road Runner does have a USENET server, and its actually pretty good... news-server.houston.rr.com Retention time is around 3-4 days, so although its not nearly as long as the pay services, you should still have plenty of time to get your files (even the large ones)... DoD, I'd like to see your demo of a DCC transfer. I don't use IRC much, but if you're going to be on chat later, I'll fire up mIRC for the tutorial...when?
