I have AT&T/Yahoo DSL with no complaints. When I run my torrent client (uTorrent....the latest update....version 1.7.6, I think) my PC (running XP) will eventually lose its connection and I'll have to restart my PC and my modem.

The problem doesn't start immediately....I'll have a few hours, I guess....I don't know exactly because I generally download and seed overnight, but I'll ALWAYS have to restart everything in the morning.

It seems that I've read/heard that some ISPs will detect a torrent client and cause issues, but I really don't know anything else about it or what to do about it.

Can anyone shed some light on this and tell me about any potential fixes? The computer runs fine so long as I'm not running uTorrent.

i'm having the same issues with dsl. i think you're correct. every time i use bit torrent, my internet connection will disconnect roughly every ten minutes. i don't understand how this forces people to stop using torrents. it does slightly ruin my online gaming experience. i'll be in the middle of a match and lose connection. :(

From a VIP on Waffles regarding an issue similar to this:

    Two things you should do:

    1) Check that your net.max_halfopen is set to 8 (Do this in Options>Preferences>Advanced)

    2) Make sure that your TCPIP.sys hasnt reset itself. Apparently a recent windows update caused this. Get the patch from here - http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads

Set this to 50 to begin with.

    Ummm....what?

Srsly, okay: option #1: do this in uTorrent? How do you do option #2? Sorry....I'm dumb.

    EDIT:
I checked option #1....net.max_halfopen is already set to 8. I'll check that patch now....

On the news page it says this patch is from 2006? What site is this? I'm kinda iffy on 3rd party programs....if you trust it as a torrent hack or something, then cool but do you have any more info?

    And to Royals,
I gotta seed. Private music torrent sites and all. And no, they still haven't given me any invites despite my good ratios.

You might want to run a few virus/spyware scanners. I had issues similar to yours and found out my PC had 25+ viruses  Now its running like new

Its not that....I run virus scans quite often. Thanks, though.

would you please post your IP so I can ban you from getting anything from me?

if everyone that used torrents did as you suggest, there would be NO torrents to have.

Are you a member of Waffles? If so type in "Utorrent" in the forums bar and you'll find many related threads. That fix is coming from a staff member.

Okay, done. I hope my 'puter doesn't explode or something. I'll run uTorrent for awhile and let y'all know how this worked.

    Thanks for the replies....

I believe utorrent has an option to encrypt the data, preventing your isp from knowing its a torrent. Could give it a shot.

Sandvine is the devil that interupts the packets in torrenting, even with encryption enabled.

    Care to expand on this?

I've been running uTorrent for several hours now and have been surfing for at least an hour on top of that. Whatever that link provided by LonghornFan did seems to have done the trick.

    Thanks, y'all.

And now....the problem is back. All the boxes go from green to red and I can't surf the web without restarting both the PC and the modem.

    Crap. Any other ideas?
