This past weekend Internet Explorer crashed on me. I could log on to the internet and all but was unable to access ANY websites. I had to uninstall/install IE to get it working again, but in case it crashes AGAIN (I'm sure it will),....which browser do you use and which do you recommend?

I've heard some nice things about Mozilla Firefox.

    Thanks.

Firefox, which is the Mozilla standdalone browser. Simply the best.

Someone will chime in with Opera, but it sucks.

I mostly use Firefox for my personal use. For work though I still have to use IE, just for consistency with the users I'm supporting.

Mozilla 1.6. With the exception of losing all my bookmarks once, it's been flawless.

As a webdeveloper, there is only one choice - Internet Explorer 6+. I'd say 90% of the internet's web pages are coded by twelve year olds (or at least look like it) who don't "finish" code well so pages have all kinds of errors and left off tags. Internet Explorer has the best "AI" (for lack of a better term) to catch and eliminate these problems.

For example, write a table in an HTML page and forget to put one of the closing TD or TR tags, Mozilla and Nutscrape tend to FREAK out when that happens, while IE sorts it out like it was there.

If IE is crashing on you there are a couple things you need to do. Open up IE and go to Tools-->Windows Update and update your OS completely, install the LATEST version of Internet Explorer... and run a virus scan for brevity's sake.

Dump windows and run Linux or BSD. K or Opera are more stable, and faster too.

He's right. IE is definitely the most forgiving. Unfortunately, you don't get IE above 5.0 on Mac, so I use Safari and Camino, which is Mozilla's Mac-compliant browser. I've used Firebird, Mozilla standard, Opera and others.

It's free and there are no ads. Opera can't say that. You can either have the free version of Opera or you can have the ad free version of Opera (for $40 or so).

FIREBIRD...are we seeing a trend here?

So you're saying WRONG code is okay? You're saying that a forgiving browser is a good one? What kind of web developer are you? And what do 12 year olds coding bad webpages have to do with your decision to use IE? The only websites 12 yr olds code are their personal sites. I'm not sure if those are the only sites you view or something. Nowadays, most sites are starting to pick up on standards compliancy check out http://www.cssvault.com and http://www.csszengarden.com.

Oh and are you a web DEVELOPER or web DESIGNER? If you're a developer then you could probably care less about html standards compliance and that sort of stuff...since you're coding mostly backend stuff anyways right? Now, if you're a designer and you make webpages for a living, then I don't know what you're doing supporting IE. If you're a designer who uses IE by choice, then you really SUCK :D

Yes, but how frustrating is it when IE still doesn't comply to published standards (although I will concede it's getting better). I always try to code my pages to strict, and make sure I get them right, than allow the various engines to guess what I mean.
