I was thinking about going to Australia for a few days over Christmas to spend time with my girl, but I was shocked at the ticket prices. (basically $4,200 & up)

I knew it would be expensive, but not that high! I can't justify spending that kind of money for going for just a week.

Does anyone know about other options? I probably need to start looking into CC's that build flyer miles, but I don't currently have those. Not sure how many miles you'd even need for a flight of this nature.

    Thanks for any help.

shouldn't be that high if you shop around. when i fly to China, i see a lot people taking a break then fly to Australia. you can fly to HK first and then AUS. a ticket to HK/SH should be around $1500 or less these days. i can't imagine ticket to AUS would be another $2000 or more.

That seems expensive did you try Travelocity and Orbitz?

Find a travel agent or use mine.

Btw, $2,000+ for a week of booty isn't worth it.

Oh, I wouldn't be doing it for that reason. She's only going to be there for a month.

OK, I found a great site that will go to ten major sites all at once. It's igougo.com

Here's what it came up with:

    Orbitz - $3,083
    Cheapflightsales - $2,546
    Travelocity - $2,944
    Cheapoair - $$2,601
    cfairs - $3,085
    Expedia - $3,167
    Priceline - $2,964
    cheaptickets - $3,032
    sidestep - $3,086
    cheapair - $4,002
    Hotwire - $5,400

Amazing how all over the board they were. I was hoping to go cheaper than that, though. $2,500 is still pretty damn high.

Can you survive without seeing her for a month? If not, your dent in the wallet may be worth it. :)

Geez, I thought my $450 ticket to Denver was expensive!

I flew to England the last 2 weeks of Sept for ~$1350 after all the taxes/fees got tacked on... $2500 is a little high, but it's not outrageous, I don't think.

Ryanair...its cheap except it doesnt take you to the major airports, so you'll have to find a ride to get there.

    Beware of tacked on fees.
There can be BIG discrepancies on the published price, but it's all about the final price.

I fly to Amsterdam once a year, and to Saudi Arabia once a year. Although, this year I'm doing neither but I am flying to BC, Canada.

I just got my air ticket to Malaysia for Christmas. I got mine for $1480. You should try calling travel agencies which normally does bookings for traveling to Asia.

It's actually pretty late to buy air tickets now. Most of the flights are pretty full.

Try calling this guy, he got my air tickets.

Wow, $1450 to London?? Sorry, but you got ripped off..I've never paid more than $600 for a roundtrip to Europe from Houston.

It was $1200 for a round trip from Austin to Birmingham, (not Houston to London) plus whatever fees and taxes - that totalled somewhere around $1350. And I'd rather spend the extra cash with an airline I know and frequently use to get the dependable service I've come to expect from it. BTW Orbitz, HotWire, etc. didn't get me any better deals than going straight through my airline.

I don't feel ripped off in the slightest, but thanks for your input anyway.

Also, second on the Ryanair. There are some insane deals through them if you carry on your luggage. I got a roundtrip flight from Birmingham to Ireland for $25 bucks.
