Ok, this goes out to my fellow techies out there.

A friend of my brother's wants me to help him out with installing a new router at his house so that he can share his dsl connection with multiple machines. I figure this will be no problem and tell him I'll help. Well, I just talked to him on the phone, and his setup sounds a little strange. He said that instead of having the traditional setup of the line running from the wall to the dsl modem to the computer, that his runs directly from the wall to an internal card in the computer. From there it splits and has a port for a phone and ethernet line. Has anyone ever heard of this? I've never heard of an internal DSL modem before. He said this is a relatively old setup, and that they got the dsl installed about 4 years ago. It is through Swbell.

sounds like your friend has a 56K modem?

a 10/100 card is usually needed, but you also usually need a DSL modem, the wall jack (regular phone cord) goes into the modem then a CAT 5 cable comes out of the modem into the 10/100 card in the PC....

    weird...

I had DSL five years ago through SWB, and they gave me an external DSL modem.

BUT, my understanding is that such things do exist. I've never seen one, personally, though.

Internal DSL modems do exist, but they are CRAP! My guess its a Speedstream 3060 modem. I work at EV1 and when they had DSL Service through IP Communications, the Speedstream 3060 was the crappy internal modems they gave away for free. Its a pain, a REAL pain to install it and it always goes out on you all the time. U can network with the internal modem, by pretty much sharing off a NIC card, connect it to a router and go from there, but I wouldnt reccomend it. Suggest to him to spend the extra $60-$100 to buy an external modem and network off a router from there, much less of a hassle and more stable too.

Cool...thanks for the info. I actually still have my external modem from when I had dsl (i've got cable now), so I'll probably just hook him up with that.

Oh btw Dave....you work at EV1.net? You guys hiring any web/server admins anytime soon? My days are numbered at my current position so I'm starting to test the waters a little.
