The Rockets are 9-5 when Kelvin Cato plays 20 minutes or more (he's averaging 8.7 boards and 1.86 blocks on 24.9 minutes in those games).
The Rockets are 10-3 when Eddie Griffin has 3 blocks or more (the last time he did this though was on January 11th).
The Rockets are 11-4 when Steve Francis has 8 or more assists. The team shoots 47.6% in those games.
The Rockets are 14-22 when Francis has 6 assists (his average) or less. The team shoots 41.5% in those games. Take it to 5 or less and the team is 8-18 (41.2% shooting). 4 or less puts the Rockets at 2-10 (40.3% shooting). I'll let you debate which is a result of which.
The Rockets are 16-4 when Yao Ming has 3 blocks or more (whoa).
The Rockets are 2-5 when Yao shoots the ball 15 times or more - including 0-4 this month. In the losses, Yao is hitting just over 45% of his shots - the two wins have him over 60%.
If Francis has exactly 5 turnovers, the Rockets are 0-8. Strangely, if Francis commits 6 or more turnovers, the Rockets are 9-6.
wow. Interesting stats indeed. I never knew this one at all. Not a good stat. I believe we need two guys to go to late. So far MO Tay has been on fire at the ends of games. His shot looks so good.
Because when Cato plays so much, usually it means they are blowout wins. More blocks = a more active EG on defense. It shows that Francis should be more of a playmaker. The more Francis passes, the better we are. More blocks = a more active Yao Ming = he is not tired. This is because usually we only go to Yao more when our guards couldn't hit a thing. Then teams would start to double team him and when he passes it out, our other players still couldn't hit which results in losses. I can't explain this. Pure coincidence me think.
and all this time y'all been complaining about steve's high turnovers when in reality he just hasn't been committing enough. rudy should've been on steve's ass at halftime of this game when he realized he only had one. come on steve, 5 more to go. you can do it, lead us to a 60% winning percentage. and i'm gonna say that the more assists thing is primarily due simply to shooting better with fairly equal amount of passing though i'm sure there is some increased ball movement that helps shooting. all in all, shooting i think is fairly independent of passing. look at tonight, how many WIDE open looks did we miss and i don't think we were necessarily moving it all that well but we created tons of open shots. posey, steve, eddie all so open, all so bricking.
I so completely agree. The more I see of this team, the more obvious it becomes that the assist total is an effect of the quality of shooting, not the other way around. As far as I can tell, what drives the quality of shooting is 1) judgment about when NOT to shoot and 2) moving the ball inside-out or driving and dishing.
So if Cato gets 20 plus minutes a game, Yao and Eggie 3 blocks each a game, and Steve has more than 8 assists and exactly 5 turnovers a game the title is ours... makes sense seriously the 5 turnover thing is way toooo strange
I agree that's the case in our game. Just shows that Francis's not a great passer by any stretch of imagination. His assists total depends on whether his teammates can hit the shots from his passes, not his passes assist/help his teammates' shooting. It's just sad.
What's the stat on Mobley/Francis scoring over 40pts a game? I know the Rockets have a pretty good record then. I don't think passing is the problem anymore, I think it is getting the guys to make shots and not commit turnovers. Example: I could pass it to B as many times as I wanted in a CC.net pickup game and I still won't get any assist. The Rockets usually play good defense, their offense is very inconsistent though.
ditto.....I'm starting to think that's true about all teams. If the shots fall, the assists go up.....not the other way around. I don't think MORE passes is the answer. The answer is BETTER passes. But to judge what makes a pass a "good" pass is purely subjective. And of course, it doesn't really matter if the shooter can't drop it in. We have some crappy-ass shooters on our team. Cato sucks, but at least he knows it, so his dunks keep his % up. EG, Posey, and Hawkins are pathetically inconsistent. They can get on streaks, but most of their streaks consist of missing....badly. Norris and Morris are just slightly better. Francis is a little better still, but he can be streaky too. Luckily, he gets bailed out a bunch. Mobley and Rice are pretty good shooters, but they have their off nights too....and of course there's always the ill-advised shot factor for Mobley. Taylor has always been pretty good offensivley, but it looks like he's just getting it back....still, how 'bout the rest of his game? Ming....he's one of the best pure shooters to get PT, but everyone is realizing that he hardly leaves the floor when he shoots, so he's starting to get blocked all the time. Everyone else just rides the pine.
Will someone please email this stuff to Rudy?! Some of these stats are rediculus Clutch, I mean, 5+ turnovers is a good thing?! The way Stevie turns it over I'm surprised we're not in the playoff race.
I read it in one of these threads but one stat that really stood out to me is that the Rockets are 1-7 in games decided by 2 points or less! A TRUE stat for a young inexperienced team! Chris
You know, I've been resisting this conclusion all along, because every year Rudy seems to bring in a "shooter" and load up the team with "shooters," so I always think what we need is fewer "shooters" and more guys who can body up or play defense. I'm slowly coming to realize that a "shooter" isn't a guy who shoots well. It's a guy who can't do anything else. When we draft or trade for a guy who's too thin or slow to play defense or do anything under the boards, we call him a "shooter." We definitely need fewer of those. Clutch, is it possible to run stats on the correlation between our shooting percentage and our total (not just Francis) assists?
"Bad" assist: Francis passes to a teammate, the teammate makes a contested jumper. "Good" assist: Kidd passes to a teammate, the teammate makes a wide open jumper/layup/dunk. That's the biggest difference between us and some of the best passing teams in the league (Kings, Nets, Jazz etc). And why our assists are so low and inconsistent compared to them.
I count 17-9 as their record when Francis/Mobley combine for 40pts plus in a game. At that clip, they would pass 50 wins in a season. Otherwise they are 13-19.
only reason his shots look good is because they go in, if they didnt, it would be a different story. Now wouldn't it?
You mean like that "bad assist" that sent the game into overtime? That's almost as dumb as "good turnover vs. bad turnover"
Where's the XO stat? I believe we're unbeaten after a night with that stuff! Dammit Yao, buy some more!
I think we should go to Yao Ming a lot in the first half, but less in the second half. We also need to reduce Ming's minutes, because we have a VERY good backup C in cato, and we're not taking advantage of the rest he can give Ming at such a critical point. This team doesn't work their asses off, and that's the difference between us winning 45 and 55 games.
