According to MSNBC, a poll released today states that 75% of Americans want the process to make sure that the votes are fair and representative of the people of Florida. They don't care how long it takes as long as this is a result. Also, I've heard some saying how the rest of the world is laughing at us and how we can't seem to elect a president. Go ahead and stop using that argument now. No Republicans cared during the Lewinsky scandal that the rest of the world thought it was a joke, so why should we care now? ------------------ "He was under more balls than a midget hooker."-Bobby Hill visit www.swirve.com
You know, for a guy that claims he is independant, you sure are Biased. ------------------ "Her Box Started Buzzing Ever Since She Heard The CRÜE"
Dude, with all due respect, you AREN'T biased? I mean, that is cool to have your beliefs but everyone is entitled to that. Give RM95 a break. Independant may mean Nader and that would indicate a liberal bias (which, I'm sure, RM95 wouldn't mind me calling him) so I can't imagine one with a liberal bias to have a real desire to see Bush elected. By the same token, there is no reason to believe that an independant with conservative leanings would want Gore to be president. Independant doesn't mean you have NO opinion. ------------------ Save Our Rockets and Comets SaveOurRockets.com
I don't think R95 ever said he was independent, he's frequently admitted that he prefers Gore. I have to kiss his butt now since we know each other. However, 75% wanting the process to be fair does not mean that what's going on now is fair. I'm sure that if you took a poll asking if it was fair to only recount certain counties, you would see that people don't feel that is fair. ------------------ People like to slam Bush's education record, but at least Texans know how to punch holes.
Thanks TheFreak and Jeff. I've never said I was independent. Would I like Gore in the White House? Yes. Would I rather Dubya take over without any cloud of doubt? Yes. That's good for the country. Democrats wouldn't have an excuse to be hardasses to the Prez if we're clear on who won. ------------------ "He was under more balls than a midget hooker."-Bobby Hill visit www.swirve.com
I'm sure if you took a poll, you'd get a whole lot of people who would say that they want violent video games banned. I'm sure you could get 75% of people to admit that free speech wasn't such a hot idea if you couched the question in the right way. Personally, I don't give a crap would 75% of people think. I care what the law says. The law says the recount is required. The law says a candidate has the legal right to ask for a handcount and it's up to the County to decide whether or not to do it. The law says the votes have to be certified by November 14th at the County level and November 17th at the State level. The law says the electors will meet on December 18th to choose the President. The law apparently says (Most everyone except the New York Times says, anyway, and I've got nothing against the Times. I even have a relative that works there) that if no candidate gets 270 electoral votes on December 18th, the House of Representatives decides. The Constitution says the President has to be inaugurated on January 20th (assuming that isn't on a Sunday). So, there really isn't a way to take as long as might be needed to sort the thing out regardless of what 75% of Americans think. We're going to get a new President by December 18th one way or another. And that President is going to take office on January 20th one way or another and whether or not al the votes are fair and representative of the people of Florida (and while we're at it, shouldn't we recount every single place? And if we're going to have a revote, shouldn't we have everybody revote? I mean, there has got to be at least one person in every state who had some sort of problem voting. By not following up on every single vote, we're not entirely certain that all the votes are fair and representative of the people of the respective states.) ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page [This message has been edited by mrpaige (edited November 11, 2000).]
mrpaige, I hope you know, despite how I want this to turn out, that your post was the best of the whole debate. ------------------ "He was under more balls than a midget hooker."-Bobby Hill visit www.swirve.com
According to a CNN/TIME poll, 55% of Americans believe this is a "serious problem" with another 15% considering this a "crisis". Roughly 25% said Gore should concede immediately while another 27 percent said he should concede if he is behind Bush in the official Florida vote count scheduled to be released next week. Thirty-nine percent said Gore should hold his concession until any court decisions on contested ballots in Florida are made. CNN STORY ------------------ NOTHING BUT .NET CLUTCHCITY.NET
Thanks. I guess I was bound to make a decent post sooner or later. The law of averages dictates it. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
Actually, the law says that a candidate has to have a majority of the electoral votes cast. There is a case where Florida may not even vote in the Electoral college (although the circumstances would be extreme). ------------------
But there is dispute on what it means if a state doesn't return with any electoral votes. The New York Times thinks that a majority of those states voting would be enough to elect the President. According to the Knight-Ridder News Service most Constitutional Scholars say the "majority" required by the Constitution would include the Florida votes even if Florida didn't vote. So, a candidate would still be required to get 270 electoral votes whether or not all the states voted or not. The Supreme Court would have to decide what the Constitution means when it talks about an electoral majority. Who knows which way they'd decide it. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
Speaking of the Florida law. I note this from one of the latest CNN stories: Bob Crawford, who replaced Gov. Jeb Bush as commissioner of Florida's Canvassing Commission, said Saturday that if a county misses the state's deadline for certifying results, the entire county's vote will be thrown out. "The statute is very clear that if a county's results are not to us by 5 p.m. Tuesday we shall ignore that county's vote, and the counties need to be very aware of that," Crawford told reporters. "Candidates asking for recounts need to be aware of that." Just something I found to be interesting. How happy do you think Americans would be if a County was excluded from the vote completely because the County failed to certify by 5pm on Tuesday? ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
