I just stumbled across this little chart from blazersedge.com showing the top 50 players in the league (based on number of offensive possessions) in terms of their points per possession.

This could easily go into the NBA dish as a demonstration of how Kevin Durant/Lebron James are playing at a ridiculous level, but I found Aaron Brooks and Trevor Ariza's location to be interesting.

Trevor's position amongst the players is startling obviously, but I am actually pretty comfortable with Aaron's efficiency at this point and only see him improving on this. Maybe he needs even more offensive possessions? Also, Caron Butler and Iggy don't look all that hot...

    Thoughts?

This chart seems to be a combination of scoring efficiency and trigger happy. The more you shoot, the more points you get per possesion. So it doesn't mean much.

Is there a minimum possesions requirement? I'd guess Landry would be ahead of both AB and Ariza for points per possesion, and it shouldn't even be close.

It's not "the more you shoot the more points per possession." Rather, its "the more efficiently you score (i.e. 3 pointer efficiency helps)" the more points per possession you get. The X-axis is solely based on the number of offensive possessions that player is involved in and there is no minimum requirement, however it is the top 50 players in the league ranked solely based on number of offensive possessions. The chart doesn't reward trigger happy players, rather it shows who is trigger happy and, of those, who can still manage to keep up offensive efficiency.

He's one player where stats definitely don't tell the whole story. He would be a great 6th man type player if his sole duty was to score and get to the charity stripe because he is great at doing that. I've followed him since his Clippers days because like DD, I was high on him joining the Rockets. However, I've come to the realization that he's a very selfish, and purely offensive player. He doesn't get you anything else besides points. Consider him a bonus specialist because he draws a lot of fouls and gets teams in the bonus. That is a major plus, but is it worth giving him a dominant role on the team? That's the big question, because on teams where he played large roles, their success (W vs L) has never been playoff caliber sans the year when the Clippers made the playoffs.

I said it's a combination of trigeeer happy and efficieny. You score more with higher efficiency, you also score more if you are trigger happy, otherwise how can Ariza be in the middle of that?

Look at the key word: involved.

For example, player A shoot 1 3 pointer and made it in 3 offensive possesions, he got 1 PPP, player B shot 3 times from long distance in 3 offesnsive possesions and made 1, he also got 1 PPP. Obviously player B was more efficient, but they'll be the same on this chart.

So the chart doesn't really mean much.

I mean player A is more efficient.

Brandon Roy is far down on the list. I'm not sure how much weight to put on this list.

You'll also notice that all the players at the bottom of the chart are point guards except Ariza  . Thats because they get more possessions because of position. The guys on the top are post players that have really high shooting percentages.

I think Steve Nash is the most impressive guy on the list... behind Durant and Lebron.

Brandon Roy looks pretty good too.

Monta Ellis is killing his team.

A lot of you really are not understanding this chart.

Higher (vertically) is better. Lower is worse. Horizontal position (left/right) has nothing to do with scoring efficiency (e.g. how good you are at scoring when you get the ball), that's how many possessions a player gets.

The chart says that Trevor Ariza gets an average number of positions and is horrible at converting each possession into points. LeBron James gets the second most possessions (behind Kobe) and is the second-best at converting each possession into points.

I know it's vertically. But what does "posssion" mean here?

No, he's not. Monta is the best player on his team. Watch the games. His team is killing him. He may wind up in a Rox uni.

I assume it means any time you have the ball in your hands. What I wonder is whether it counts assists as scoring or not.

So the player who touched the ball but then passed out gets 0 for that possesion? If that's the case, it even more in favor of trigger happy players.
