Well instead of doing my 4-page paper (due in 7 hours) I have instead been looking through what my possible summer plans might be. I could take courses for a few weeks at places like, say Columbia, NYU, USC, or stay home in Alabama while maybe doing some type of volunteer/interning with the Athletic Department at the UA. Then I was thinking, maybe I could, if I would be in New York, try to get an internship with the MLB, NFL, NBA, or specific teams like the Yankees Mets or Knicks. Or yes, I'm even looking into the Howard Stern show. But I came across this one if anyone is interested in getting an internship at MMP: How would you like to see your work at Minute Maid Park? Speaking of internships, I see Pixar has some openings. You'd have to live in Oakland though. http://jobsearch.pixar.careers.monster.com/jobsearch.asp?col=dlt&sort=rv&vw=b&fn=8267&q= I've watched the behing the scenes stuff on the Incredibles dvd. Pixar looks like a fun place to work.
Unpaid internships are for suckers. I was an engineering major in college and made more money per month at an internship with an oil company than my wife makes as a public schoolteacher with 5 years experience.
i think internships in sports and entertainment are a little different than at an oil company, dont get me wrong, Im sure you do well now, but with the entertainment internships, there are so many people that would do the work for free, usually they stick with it and can easily moveup within the ranks after graduation... I had three internships when I was in school. two of them gave me a stipend and my last one gave me a weekly salary to live off of. I worked WB, promoting films on message boards ( it felt like spamming), I worked at a music publicity firm, and i ended up working at a talent agency for the last two years of school.... you cant put a value on an internship.... dont ask me what i do now...
I understand, I was being facetious. Each industry sets its own standards for training, and for me the experience gained and the addition to the resume were worth far more than the financial part of the deal. I would imagine that to be the same for a non-paying internship as well.
A hiring manager at a very prestigious firm once told me that every summer internship was worth one-third to one-half of a grade point to most places hiring people out of college. Example...someone with a 4.0 and no internships or work experience would be the same level as someone with a 3.67 and an internship. The more internships the better.
If you want a career in sports, an internship with a team is a must. I got my start by working two summers with the Dallas Cowboys. The real problem is getting the internship, though, as it's more an exercise in "who you know" than anything else. Just food for thought. Good luck!
I'm 100% positive that I would give up my well-paying job in a heartbeat for an unpaid internship just for the chance at getting my foot in the door of the sports world. Unfortunately, I tried that for 3 years and got nowhere after unpaid stints with various sporting publications. Ugh.
