How do you fellow insomniac's condition yourselves to fall asleep these days amid the mind-racing and self-doubt about falling asleep?

I think I seriously have an aversion to falling asleep now. Like an actual ****ing aversion to sleep itself, lol. It's fairly crummy. I'm so worried about not getting a good nights sleep that I'm shooting myself in the foot before I even fall asleep. If I do manage to fall asleep, I worry about getting back to sleep when I get up. It's more or less just a worry about sleep. It's not necessarily that much life stress at all.

A hot bath is the only thing that seems to help me these days. Yet, I don't like getting in hot water every night to do so. It seems like I can't shutoff my mind when I go to bed when I go to sleep or wake up to actually relax. Help o_O o_O?

I would have that problem for several months at a time. During my work week I would average about 3 to 4 hours of sleep each night and then on my Saturday sleep around 12 to 15 hours.

I used to force myself to stay up and go to sleep at a reasonable time to get a good sleeping pattern going, but it rarely worked. Now whenever I'm sleepy, I sleep if the situation allows. Listen to your body when it's tired.

If your mind is racing too much at night, read something. My grandfather had the same problem and always kept a book by his bed.

I suffer from insomnia every now and then, which is good considering I often have to work really long hours. I found reading some before going to sleep helps.

Actually, mar1juana and alcohol will help you go to sleep better, but they tend to cause you to wake up (when they effect where off) and be unable to go back to sleep. Quitting smoking, weed, or alcohol can also cause intense insomnia.

I have had lifelong insomnia. One of the main things to help was keeping a sleep journal. Chronicle when your caffiene usage, alcohol consumption, excercise, naps, etc. You start to notice some patterns on nights where you sleep really poorly. I can't have caffiene after 5 PM. I try not to drink too late in the night. I like a glass of milk before bedtime. Going for a walk in the evening is a good thing.

It helps to get into a nighttime routine: go to bed at a pretty constant time, have milk and cookies (milk has some enzyme which can help sleep), read in bed, etc. When you train yourself to have sleep habits, it makes it easier to go to sleep.

If you're having troubles sleeping, get out of bed if it's been longer than 30 minutes. You don't want to associate sleeplessness with your bed. Get up and read a book for a while and then go back to bed when you're tired.

Ambien\Lunesta help if it's really bad. You can also try melatonin to help you sleep through the night better. Melatonin is a supplement, so it's always a bit dodgier as to the content. You'll also have really intense dreams (kind of like the patch).

You sound a lot like me. I don't sleep well during the week and then catch up on the weekends. It's not that I can't sleep at all. I actually sleep soundly when I get to sleep, it's just that I can't get to sleep early. I did some googling a couple of weeks ago and found this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_syndrome

Pretty much describes my sleeping situation for the past 18 years or so. Never knew about it until now :( . I'm going to try Melatonin (recommended treatment) soon.
