Insider: Rockets may make Antonio Davis serious offer

However, I would take it with a grain of salt... they are completely offbase with the Mo Taylor argument. We cannot resign him in disregard to the cap because we do not have his bird rights, and if we did, we would have to renounce them to sign Davis.

Orlando won't be Davis' only suitor. Davis may receive a serious offer from the Rockets, a league source told Insider. According to the source, the Rockets, like the Magic, feel that Davis' versatility makes him as prized a trophy as Chris Webber this summer. Given that they can already exceed the cap to sign free-agent Mo Taylor at power forward, the Rockets would like to use their money to nail down the center position, their weakest link.

According to the source, if Davis indicated that he'd be happy in Houston, the Rockets would either waive or attempt to do a sign-and-trade for free-agents Hakeem Olajuwon and Shandon Anderson. The Rockets would like to re-sign both players, but right now their agent, Dan Feagan, is asking for big-time raises for both players.

And, if Orlando wants to get under the cap, we are also the leading contenders for Outlaw according to Insider:

To get far enough under the cap to sign Davis or Webber, several things have to happen. First the Magic must waive free-agent Andrew DeClerq and find a home for Bo Outlaw. Houston has been interested in Outlaw in the past, and seems to be the top contender for his services. The Magic must Outlaw for basically nothing in return. Depending on salary demands, the Magic may also be forced to move either Pat Garrity, Mike Miller or Darrell Armstrong, something they are loathe to do (in the case of Miller and Armstrong).

id take AD any day, i think he'd be a great fit.

i wouldnt mind bo outlaw either -- and it appears he might be a little easier to get if ad is heading to magicland.

Davis would be welcome here, but the majority of his minutes would come as a center here -- and the 6'9' man wouldn't be as successful in that position in the Western conference. Apparently, the Magic are wooing him in the same manner as they did with Hill, Duncan and McGrady last year. Doc Rivers and GM Gabriel reportedly showed up at his house in Orlando immediatley after the stroke of midnight.

I would be suprised if Antonio lands anywhere outside of Orlando or Toronto. But you never really do know with FA's anymore.

What is Bo's salary, if it is anything above 4-5 mil, it is too much for a banger and def. specialist whose offensive game is horrendous.

What would we have to give up to get Outlaw? If I'm not mistaken he makes 4.5 million next year so it seems that Outlaw for Walt would work, but there's no way the Magic accept that trade. I'd also like to sign Davis, but that is a long shot at best.

Just to put things into perspective a little:

Antonio Davis is 6'9" and 230lbs and if we sign him it would be for the Center postition.

Eddie Griffin is 6'9" and 222lbs (only 8lbs lighter than Davis) and we drafted him for the Small Forward spot.

I don't think Davis would have the same success inside against 270+ pound centers in the West.

Is there any way we can sign Webber and trade for Davis?

If we can get Davis you can pencil us into the playoffs! Man let the Rockets be able to get him and re-sign Mo!

Uhh... the thought of the Rockets spending the max on Antonio Davis sounds kind of stupid to me. Granted, we need a big man, but Antonio Davis can't bang with the big players in the West.

What big man that we can get CAN bang in the West? Besides I would take Antonio Davis at center over Divac, Bradley, Dean Garrett, Ostertag, and anybody the Suns trot out there. In fact, if we got Davis he would probably be the 2nd or 3rd best center in the West behind Shaq and maybe David Robinson. He was probably the best center in the East, with Zo out most of the season. He took it to Mutombo.

Western Conference centers... blah blah blah... who exactly are we talking about?

Hmmm... could it be the "S" word? Because I really can't think of another that the 6'9 Davis couldn't handle at all. DRobb? Give me a break. He can get his 15/10 all night.. it won't break the Rockets.

Nope, it's Shaq (oops, said it!). So stop using this mythical term "Western Conference centers" and say what you mean. You want to stop Shaq.

Well here's some news: ain't gonna happen. That massive mountain aka Deke Mutombo? Shaq made him look like Tony Battie on a bad night.

Forget Shaq. He's unstoppable. But he won't be in 3 years, I'd wager. Build a nice team. Hope that Kobe has a really crappy series. Hope that Shaq's back gives out.

Davis would be great against any other team. And that's all we should worry about.

    Don't go anywhere near AD!!!!

He is 32...and wants a LONG deal, ie 5 years or longer...

Whoever signs him will get a great deal for a year or two...and then three to five years of contract dead weight.

Antonio Davis would be a great pickup. I don't know where this idea came about that he can't bang with Centers in the West. The only one who is better than him is Shaq in the West.

I have a feeling Antonio really wants be in Orlando. They need to dump some players to free up space to pay him more than the exception though.

So, if they are willing to trade us Mike Miller for .50 cents on the dollar, that may be a better idea than Antonio Davis. Rudy T liked Mike Miller last year and if the Magic are desperate enough to do whatever it takes to land Antonio, the Rockets might be able to lowball them for Miller.

Miller and EG at Forwards, We'd be set for years.

Seeing how you guys have been crying about Cato getting too much money, it's foreseeable that AD will replace Cato as the most popular topic here. Granted, Davis is an excellent PF, he rebounds, block shots, and hustles, but when the Rockets are stuck with the max on him, everyone will be crying foul because we can't manuver to get the next superstar.

It's all in the tarot cards baby, believe that. [IMG]

    How about:

    Orlando sends Outlaw to Houston.
Houston sends Walt and Kenny Thomas to Detroit
Detroit absorbs the cap hit, but only for one year, and gets Kenny Thomas for free.
