I'm sure, some, if not most of you, will one day get to meet the Queen of England... when you do here is one basic rule. Don't touch her! =================== 'And this one is me with the Queen after we had lunch' By Sally Pook (Filed: 16/10/2002) Louis Garneau puts his arm around the Queen as they pose It is a snapshot like no other. Taken with a cheap camera, a Canadian cycling champion stands grinning with his arm around the Queen, no less. The Queen, seemingly unruffled by the bravado of Louis Garneau, smiles broadly. The photograph was taken as the Queen staged a royal walkabout in Ottawa. "I asked for a picture and she said: 'No problem'," said Mr Garneau. "So I just put my arm around her shoulder." The apparent breach of royal protocol did not appear to upset the Queen, who smiled for Mr Garneau's wife, Monique Arsenault. Buckingham Palace officials, touring Canada with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, looked on open-mouthed. One official said: "It's not the first time that someone has put an arm around the Queen, and again the Queen just takes it as it comes." click for complete article
George Washington??? where did you read that??? i've read more than a few of his biographies and never came across that...and never anything that would lead me to think that sounded like something he would do. he denied royalty, you know??!!
George washington did do that. He also comissioned a super fancy carriage for someone befitting the title of the president. Of course the only example he'd known his whole life was monarch, and while he didn't want to be a monarch, he did view the office with a tremendous amount of dignity. There was a story that I think Adams, bet Jefferson, who was Washington's friend to go and put his arm around Washington. Jefferson did, and Washington just glared at him, and then didn't speak to him for three whole months. I can't remember if this was taking from writings of Jefferson, or Adams. But it was part of a College History course I had to take. Again, Washington did reject monarchy, and did many things that the monarchs wouldn't do, but his whole concept of ruler previously had been monarchy, so it's only natural that certain characteriscs would beed through.
fair enough...if i read that i certainly don't remember it. the super-fancy carriage thing doesn't surprise me...but the "don't touch me" thing does. it should be noted, as you point out, that washington lived over 200 years ago...this is the 21st century!!! nice to see the queen overlooks these things today!
The former Premier of Newfoundland, Brian Tobin, got into a bit of trouble for touching the Queen. They were walking side by side down several steps and he placed his hand on the small of her back to steady her and/or make sure she didn't fall.
I think I remember reading that when the Capital was in New York, Washington would routinely go and stand in an alcove for an hour or two, completely still and striking a commanding pose, while throngs of folks filed by just to look at the great man. If I find the cite in the next few days, I'll post it.
the words "Queen of England" and "small of her back" should never, and i mean NEVER, be in the same sentence.
