Infinity Puts News WCBS-AM On The 'Net

New York's "Newsradio 880" will begin streaming its programming live over the Internet on Monday. The "WCBS@Work" stream will mirror the station's programming but will include separate, targeted advertising. WCBS VP/GM Steve Swenson says, "Streaming on our website will provide direct access to the information our listeners need throughout the day, whether they're eating lunch at their desk, dashing off to a meeting or ending the day and heading home." Infinity has about half a dozen music stations available on the 'Net — including WUSN (US99)/Chicago, KTWV (The Wave)/Los Angeles and WCBS-FM/New York — by way of an arrangement with AOL. WCBS-AM is Infinity's first non-music stream and its first outside of its deal with AOL.

I imagine if 790 started streaming that would be the only thing that would force 610 into doing it.

I'd bet 790 will since 740 and 950 already do (same company).

I'm also sure if it were up to 610 they would have by now, it's up to Infinity and that's why I put up the initial post.

Yeah, I think Infinity might change it's policy if they started losing listeners because of that though.

A question - why doesnt 610 stream? Is the equipment or streaming expensive or what?

Right now I think it's something to do with being against company policy. Although, if they're doing this, maybe they're changing company policy. Hrmmmm...

Even if Infinity allows 610 to stream, Rockets broadcasts would be blacked out.

The DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) put some pretty onerous limitations on streaming radio over the 'net. It seems to have affected only the bigger guys (Infinity, Clear Channel) and is related to how much they have to pay copyright owners for their content. I am not certain why this has affected talk radio shows since they rarely play music, but that is how I understand it.

790 streaming has NOTHING to do with us streaming. We want to stream. Our PD wants to stream. Whatever the cost, whatever the hurdles we want to pay them, overcome them, and stream. Our problem is from a mandate from NY that will not allow us to. It goes back to an outdated belief that there is no way for it to be financially possible. There have been reports done that have disproven this. I did one myself. The brains in NY are testing in 6 markets right now. Markets of different sizes and geographic dispositions. When the data gets back they will make the decision on what to do. Trust me, we are banging away to get online and we will. In time.
