So, I am walking my puppy yesterday (not a euphemism), and a skateboarder comes by scaring the living crap out of her, and I think to myself, "Why have I always found skateboards so annoying?" And then I figured it out. Some devices have such a horrific noise to utility ratio that they offend even the most barbaric senses. I don't want this to be a pro/anti skateboarding thing, and I know a lot of you probably love your skateboards. There are so many other examples that are even better. Leaf blowers, for instance. Make a ton of noise -- you can hear them for blocks around -- and they move a few leaves around. Let's see: burn gas, strap a heavy pack to your back, require ear protection <<<< broom. Please list other things that have a terribly low utility-to-noise ratio. Skateboards and leaf blowers are just two examples to get you started.
You're also forgetting about frequencies for animals. All cats despise the vacuum cleaner. Loud bass cars w/out mufflers
Yeah, what is with the "muffler" that amplifies noise instead of suppressing it? Why does that make people feel good? "Okay, everyone now knows that you're driving your 92 civic around the neighborhood, and mostly they hate you, but congrats on all that."
Any people skateboard here? I always wondered for the urban skating on sidewalks why rubberized wheels are not more popular? Obviously for wood the normal wheels are the best but for the street I would think something softer would be wanted. Takes away the noise.
Yes. They make "street wheels" which are softer. However, those are more for skating as a means of transportation/longboarding. Harder wheels provide greater speed. Cleverly disguised skater-hater thread... Harley Davidson motorcycles are one of the most ridiculous things manufactured today. I also agree with the little rice-burner Hondas with grapefruit-shooter tailpipes. Silly...
Car audio system: People spend hundreds of dollars pimping their car with a sound system yet the car was never designed to listen to music beyond a certain decibel range. The speakers and subwoofer are enclosed within structural components of the car with very little space for the sound to travel and expand. Now I understand the desired effect is for other people to notice your loud bass and thumping inside your car but that quickly becomes very annoying. Unless you have a large hall with ample space, there is no need to project a 1000 watts of sound when all your hear is noise pollution.
This immediately came to mind: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Nnzw_i4YmKk&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Nnzw_i4YmKk&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
