Its been a while since I've seen one of these. For all the music gurus on this board I am a novice when it comes to Indie Bands. I just discovered The Veils and it interested me enough to make this thread. For someone who is oblivious when it comes to Indie Bands, what are some that you recommend?
Good starting point for the last 10 years... Arcade Fire Spoon The National Interpol White Stripes Hold Steady Franz Ferdinand Arctic Monkeys New Pornographers Modest Mouse
you dont have to start a thread specifically for "Indie" bands....every music thread that gets started ends up being a bunch of indie hipsters shaking their e-penors at each other.
The Enigmatic Pontificators album, My Hipster Bellybutton, is really good, if not somewhat puzzling, mysterious, dogmatically pompous and unavailable.
Is that why five of the posts in this thread are preemptively making fun of hipsters? EDIT...make that 6.
A good chunk of indie music is pretty bad but gets flaunted as awesome by the groupies. <br> Check out: Editors- An End has a Start; The Back Room The National- Alligator; Boxer Modest Mouse- Good News For People Who Love Bad News; We were dead before the ship even sank The Shins- Oh Inverted World; Chutes Too Narrow MGMT- Oracular Spectacular; Time To Pretend EP Phoenix- Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix Antlers- Hospice Arcade Fire- Funeral Band of Horses- Cease to Begin; Everything All the Time Wolf Parade- Apologies To The Queen Mary Fleet Foxes- Fleet Foxes; Sun Giant Arctic Monkeys- Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not Interpol- Turn on the Bright Lights m83- Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts
considering there were only 5 posts prior to mine, and one of them was your serious answer....I dont see how you could take mine as making fun of hipsters....I was just stating a CF fact....all music threads end up with only indie fans posting cause nobody else knows what or who they are talking about. If you took that as insulting, it speaks more to your state of mind than mine.
Just making an observation that it seems like there are just as money posts making fun of (or referencing, if you will) hipsters as there are actual hipsters shaking their "e-penors" at each other.
i have been into the Avett Brothers after I saw them recently at High Sierra Music Festival. they have an Americana/bluegrassy vibe and are worth checking out.
Haha. I suggest you take that up with Wikipedia, Rollingstone, and every other music magazine in existence.
"Indie," much like "alternative" before it, has made the sad transition from being a term that described the circumstances of the music to one that describes the sound of a recognizable genre. "Alternative" originally meant an alternative to mainstream music, and as such, most of the bands included in that group really didn't sound all that much like one another - they just sounded different from the majority of mainstream music. Now, "alternative" basically describes the Nickelback sound. "Indie" originally meant independent from the mainstream music market, and as such, most of the bands included in that group didn't sound all that much like one another - they just sounded different from the music that major labels wanted to try and make money from. Now, "indie" basically describes the Phoenix/Fleet Foxes sound with the jumpy guitars and high keening (and somewhat inept) male vocals. Just like "alternative" before it, "indie" is now the mainstream. So here are some suggestions for independent (not really "indie") music: Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted Jesus Lizard - Liar Superchunk - On the Mouth Thee Oh Sees - Help Comets on Fire - Avatar Meat Puppets - II Nation of Ulysses - Plays Pretty for Baby The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt The Smith Westerns - eponymous
