I've been away from Houston for the last few years, and since then I've discovered that Indian food is by far the best food ever. I've heard that Houston has some of the best Indian food restaurants around from friends I have here at school, but no one seems to remember what any of them are called, or where any of them are. My wife and I are coming down to visit this month, and we were hoping to find out how good they are first hand. Technically we'll be in Pasadena, but location isn't important. Can y'all help me out with any good places? Thanks.
You simply need to elongate your 'west side' and lose the 't.' Like this. wessiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide. beyotch! Got it? Good.
DarkHorse, it's rather rude of you to interrupt while the finer points of how to declare our geographic location is discussed. But, I've read a lot of good reviews about Bombay Brasserie (sp?). I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, so sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Lots of great places in the Hillcroft/Harwin area...can't remember any names though, but I know 'em when I see 'em. Seriously, try Indika, it's one of the better restaurants in Houston, regardless of cuisine.
India's on Richmond Ave. and Bombay Brasserie at Richmond and Sage are both very good Indian restaurants. Those are the only ones in town I've been to. I've heard Khyber is good, but I've never been there.
That area is a traffic nightmare. But, yes, if there's such thing as a little India here in town, that'd be it.
Thanks Buck... So far you're the reigning authority. By the way... for whatever it's worth I was kind of hoping for semi-authenticity if possible. Well, at least places that don't serve beef, if you know what I mean. Thanks for the help.
Good call on Bombay Brasserie. Here's a couple of articles for ya, Darkhorse: http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/2001-09-13/cafe.html/1/index.html http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/2002-09-26/bestrest2.html/1/index.html
wow..you have no idea how right you are! i don't wear old navy to work...though i do wear old navy boxers virtually everday (there's information you needed around lunchtime!)...but i think every pair of shorts, cargo pants and relaxed khaki pants i own come from old navy...plus a slew of cheap t-shirts.
http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurants/cuisine/indian.asp The places I personally have been to, and enjoyed: (1) Shiva: 2514 Times (2) Udupi Cafe: 2121 Richmond (3) Madras Pavillion: 3910 Kirby (4) Midtown Pizzeria: 2200 Louisiana [Yes, I know. There used to be a separate Indian restaraunt, but now they are under one roof. Both the Indian stuff and the Pizza are great]
I loove Indian and have eaten it all of my life, all over the world. Northern: OK, Indias was once good, but they changed management and I have since found them to be declining in both quality of food and food preparation. Khyber is horrible unless you like watered down, Americanized crap. Bombay Brasserie - only been there once but I found it to be rather bland so I never went back. Bombay Palace (westheimer inside the loop) - it is a chain, but it is an upscale chain and is quite good, especially their fish. Shiva (west U) - has always been good when I have gone. Akbar (hillcroft south of richmond) - I think this actually has a different name now, but it was called this and was generally always good. New name could mean different management and not as good, though. Southern: Madras (Kirby) already mentioned, just wanted to confirm its greatness Udupi - decent, their lunch buffet is solid, but going for dinner can be a disappointment Hillcroft b/w Richmond and Harwin - many small, hole in the wall places, mostly southern and mostly good. A great buffet place ($3 vegetarian, $5 meat) is called Standard Sweets and is on the westside of Hillcroft in a stripmall. Is Indika the place that is fairly pricey with small portions? If so, I didn't love it and found it to not be worth the price (although I thought the place was called Indiana, or something).
Shiva is hands down the best Indian restaurant I've been to in town (and I've been to all of them over a million times). Some of their specialty dishes almost beat out my mom's homecooking... I SAID ALMOST MOMMY! All that crap on Hillcroft is like... yuck (to me). I hate snacky Indian food, reminds me too much off my childhood when I was a certified beef eater (and little else).
Ashiana has been consistently rated as the top Indian restaurant in Houston. It has also been recognized as one of the top-ten Indian restaurants in the nation. Yes, it is pricey, but if you want quality, you have to be willing to pay. It is located in the Memorial Area.
