What kind of musical instruments? Are you talking about electric guitars and stuff like that? Violin shops? (I play the double bass, so I tend to go to these kinds of stores more often...) Or maybe marching band instruments? Be more specific, man... :)

There are a few big chain stores that are pretty much the same in any city (for example, The Guitar Center in Northcross Mall-- a good place for mullet sightings)...

There are also a few small stores-- Guitar Resurrection on Guadalupe near campus has guitars (obviously) and basses, but no drums...

There's also Strait Music which has all kinds of instruments...

If he's into vintage guitars, there's these guys...

    Austin Vintage Guitars
    1110 S. Lamar Blvd.
    Austin, TX 78704-2300
    Phone: (512)428-9100

I hope this is at least a start... I personally don't have much af a customer relationship with anyone in Austin. I bought all my stuff when I was living in Houston a few years ago. I couldn't really say whether or not some of these places are "good" in terms of whether or not they'd rip you off... but as a musician, its fun to go in and play...

Not necessarily a store where you'll find many instruments, but more like musical art, sculptures, and collectibles (as well as a few instruments), CD's of rare varieties, and other cool stuff is a place called Wild About Music. It is at 9th and Congress.....

It is truly a cool store if you have a deep appreciation of music. Last year I had a painting I purchased delivered to my house in Dallas. They have some really cool and unique artwork by local artists. Some of the Stevie Ray Vaughn items are nice.
