I never thought I would see it. I am beside myself with emotion. God bless The United States of America.
Didn't think it would happen either. I remember laughing off at his name, America has done a great thing I believe.
I am happy for America, and especially my African American brothers. America has FINALLY grown up. DD
I am truly moved as well. I had tears well up in my eyes while Mr. Obama was addressing our nation. I think we'll be just fine. I felt for McCain and thought his concession speech was gracious... I was irritated by the idiots in his crowd booing our 44th POTUS-to-be. Some people just will never get it. I am thankful and happy that in my lifetime we have seen this day. It is a great moment in our country's history. Sincerely. While, I do not like every detail of every policy idea of our President-Elect, (but I could easily say the same for the losing candidate) I will support him with prayer as our leader. May God keep our country and next POTUS, Barack Obama, safe, and may He continue to bless us all! BTW- I'm almost sad I took a bet... this is too historic to not be a part of... Although, I will honor my word. One question though, does the six months start tonight at midnight, or Jan. 20th?
I am happy for all fellow Americans out there, be they black, white, red, yellow, blue, pink, green, or rainbow colored. I can't express the joy and escitement I have for the next four years. I hope that this is the final nail into racial inequality's coffin.
This is a great and historic night but the one nagging thought about the election of Barack Obama that bothers me is that it took a time of great tumult and after eight years of a terrible administration for America to finally elect a black man. Obama is truly an exceptional individual who is fully deserving of the office and he is to be saluted. Obviously it takes an exceptional person to be elected president but I can't help thinking if this wasn't a time of great uncertainty and if Obama wasn't the great orator and calm presence that he is would he be where he is? I've heard that Thurgood Marshall used to say that black lawyers had to be exceptional and far better than Whites because whites wouldn't except a black lawyer unless he was exceptional. I wonder if we will ever get to the point where race is so inconsequential that a black man could be considered president even if he wasn't very inspirational and the times weren't turbulent.
I am not even an American Citizen (yet) and I am thrilled!! It is a great day for democrats, but I cannot help to feel a loss when thinking about what is going on in California right now. One step forward, to steps back. Sometimes I just don’t “get” some Americans. For me, the land of the free is not so free at all. Hopefully it will all change, just like we changed history today.
That was your finest post, IROC. Kudos. I felt shivers watching that speech like many here. I've been campaigning for Barack Obama since he announced his candidacy and this feels like such vindication in our nation. We really are a great people and, like Barack said, we have a lot of work to do. I know that he is not the catalyst for Change in America; we are. We have to do our part to make sure that we move toward the society we want for ourselves. I must say (and I'll probably say it again in more relevant threads) that I was moved by John McCain's speech. This was the man who I used to respect so much. Here was the man who probably could have beaten Barack Obama had he remained true to himself. But, the boos and jeers in his crowd are evident of what he allowed himself to become and in part why he lost the election. I hope that John McCain can return to the Senate and regain his position as a moderate leader, willing to work with President Obama, that we can all respect.
You and the great TM may very well be right, but this is a very good first step, and I'm pretty sure he'd be ok with it right now.
One step at a time. We will eventually get there too. I see the last 8 troubled years as a catalyst. Eventually, at some point in the future we would have had a colored man being elected. The failed Bush presidency just accelerated the process.
This is a great moment in our history. We've come a long way as a country. I liked John McCain's speech and know he is a good man. I agree that this was the man we thought was running. I also know he can and probably will help get this country back on track. Congratulations to Barack. I hope he lives up to expectations. He has a lot of work ahead. Now we need to come together and end our slump to make America's future bright again.
Why can you just not be happy? This reminds me of a DA who told me that he could hang a child molester naked over a tank of sharks and the parents would rightly complain the sharks did not look hungry enough. Don't over analyze the situation.
Very emotional moment. Wont ever forget it. Wife, mom, pops, and I watched the speech from Chicago. I wouldnt trade it for the world.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that none of the other Western powers has ever voted in a non-caucasian minority as head of state. Savor it, and have more faith in our country's ideals once again.
