Of all the candidates that sought the Democratic Party nomination, in hindsight, which one would have done the best on Nov 2 against George W Bush? Perhaps a ranked list would have provide additional insight as well.

    This is my ranked list:
    Clark
    Edwards
    Dean
    Kerry
    Gephardt
    Lieberman
    Kucinich
    Mosely-Braun
    Sharpton

I think that Clark, as a Southerner and a proven leader (supreme commander of NATO) and also Vietnam War Hero, would have performed the best. He would have been able to get all of the same states as Kerry but might have been able to pick off at least his home state of Arkansas and perhaps a couple of others. That would have been enough to win. Same thing could be said of Edwards but he does not have the resume of Clark although Edwards is a better campaigner.

You're list explains as much as anything why the Democratic Party lost the election. That's a hell of a poor choice, and I'm a Democrat. I would have checked "none of the above."

Me too on "None of the Above", but if I had to choose one, I would choose John Edwards.

Who would have been able to convince people that there were no WMDs in Iraq, nor any close ties between Iraq and 9-11, or to vote for their economic interest rather than against it, etc etc etc (all of which, of course, is the truth) ?

No one. I chose Sharpton. At least he can bamboozle people.

The interesting thing is that these are the brave souls who put themselves forward voluntarily for the "privilege" of seeking this office.

At a time when the Democrats were so assured of the profound evilness and stupidity of President Bush, why didn't someone of championship caliber step forward? Is there someone of championship caliber to step forward? Who do you think it should have been?

Is it that the best Democratic candidates do not have the support of the leadership because the leadership is off in LA-LA Land?

Edwards, Dean or Clark. For starters...

...they were hardly running against a thoroughbred Republican candidate here (cue Max's smarty-assed comment). And they didn't exactly get pummelled.

A better campaign could have swung this for Kerry too.

Dean would have been destroyed. Utterly humiliated.

I think they should have let Hillary get bloodied now so if she lost she could still come back in the next one.

No doubt; I'm sure you guys have seen it by now but newsweek has their detailed and quite lengthy "Behind the Scenes" from the past 2 years of election coverage. It's been up on the msnbc website for a while. Anyway; Karl Rove was practically foaming at the mouth once Dean became the front runner. He wouldn't have even had a chance.

I disagree. He wouldn't have done best but on my ranking, he would have done better than Kerry. No charges of equivocating or flip-flopping would've stuck to him. No Swift Boat attacks. Hw would have energized the youth vote. I ranked him ahead of Kerry.

Rove used issues that weren't so important and distortions on Kerry. The marriage amendment, and how Bush wasn't for those Hollywood type values were used against Kerry.

They might have had some of those for Dean, plus we all know he yelled. If someone yells that's worse than sending troops to die for questionable reasoning, bankrupting the economy, etc.

Howard Dean was who I wanted to win the primary, and I think people would have known where Dean stood on the issues more clearly than was the case with Kerry, but the issues that really matter like an unconventional, strange wife, and being unwilling to alter the constitution to make sure a segment of the population can never get what the rest of us have, is more important in the minds of enough voters.

Al Gore would have won this election.

People like folks making a comeback, or rooting for someone they feel got screwed.

Al Gore would have won, IMHO. Because a lot of people would have voted for him, simply because they felt he won last time.

Just my humble opinion, but I think Gore would have won, and can if he runs in 2008 too.

The tradition within the Democratic Party is that no one gets a second chance.

Dean: We should not be in Iraq.
    Moderator: Thank you Mr Dukakis.

Can you imagine how many times we'd have heard him braying like a donkey?

But Gore gets an angry face, and sweats. The Republicans would have used that to run on, and Gore would have lost.

Gore would have won (enough to be president) in 2000 had he had the angry face.
I didn't vote for Gore in 2000, but loved him afterward. I think a lot of the democratic wing of the Democratic party felt the same way.

    Kerry had the best shot.

This election was almost unwinnable (kind of hard, if not impossible, to oust a president who sat during the most significant event in a country's history, and was sitting on top of a war to boot).

Had Kerry slapped down the swift vets, rather than taking the high road, he would have won.
