In hindsight - was Jackson/Bokey for Wesley a good trade.

When I first read about this trade here on Clutch I was furious that the Rockets would trade away Jim Jackson. After all, here was a guy who has been a vagabond around the league, but upon landing in Houston, dude really showed his mettle. He not only played well, but also came across as a quasi-leader on a team that really needed one.

I wasn't so much upset that we might be trading Jackson (and Boky, whom I sorry, just sucks) for a lessr talent in Wesley than I was simply sorry for Jackson whom seemingly gave all and did everything right to remain a Rocket the rest of his career.

Still, at first it seemed the trade would work out and that Wesley really was a needed ingredient to the revamped Rockets - now, I question how much Wesley has left in the tank. I'd rather have Jackson.

Wesley is superior on perimeter defense and ballhandling. Jackson is a better player but he doesn't fit on our team. McGrady plays 42 minutes a game, we don't need a backup small forward of that caliber.

I think he'll come around offensively. He's always been a pretty decent shooter.

Look at our record since the trade.

    End of discussion.

It was a more of a depth/defensive move; Jackson was too slow to guard SG's, so it forced Tracy to do so and it tired him out; letting Tracy guard SFs is a little less draining for t-mac. Wesley can guard SG's and PG's so he adds needed depth there.

On offense, Jackson was a shooter who seemed to miss open shots; Wesley hasn't found his shot yet, but if he does it's no big loss.

We are playing better in spite of the trade. Look at Wesley's shooting percentage. Look at his salary obligation next year, compared to Jackson's ($2.7 million). We may be playing better, but we could have got more for an underpaid Jim Jackson, and an expiring contract in Boki, than a 6' 1" shooting guard who comes with a $5 million salary obligation next year.

And we could have struggled as badly throughout the year as we did in the beginning. Personally, I don't want to see the Rockets keep Jackson just because he's cheaper. Wesley is a better fit for our team. Notice that Wesley guards the quicker guards, something Sura is pretty much incapable of because of his height and injuries. Jackson was good at defense because he was strong, not because he was quick.

Bottom line, if we needed to guard someone like Carmelo, JJ would be a better fit. Unfortunately, there's more quicker, smaller guards than they're are post up small forwards.

Well, he was just awful tonight. Had he hit just a few of his wide open missed shots, the Rockets would have won going away. And to compound his overall bad game, he could not guard Davis down the stretch. I think Davis went 6 for 6 in the fourth before JVG put TMac on him. Westley's shooting percentage is horrible, in the low thirties I believe.

I believe the concept of "fitting' the team is more important. Jackson was a good fit when Francis and Mobley was here, now I see Wesley a better fit. After all, we are trying to find the pieces to build around T-mac and Yao.

I think Wesley's shot will eventually start to fall. He's been a good shooter for too long to continue to miss wide open looks for an extended period of time.

It was definately sad to see a vet like Wes miss wide open 3 after 3, only to see a kid like Marcus Banks come off the bench and drop a 3 like it was nothin.

I hated trading for such and old, old player. 5 mil obligation sucks. The deals the JVG is behind appear that he is trying to get old talent around TMac and YAo now! We did this in Hakeem's last years -See Barkley, and Pippen to get a winner while Hakeem was still playing.

I do not understand the deals now- Sppon - 5 mil. Chalrlie Ward- 3 year commitment, Wesley - no offense at all, with 5 mil commitment....
    I do not get it.

I did not like the trade then and like it less now...

Wesley sucks--old, old , old, broke down players suck

who is this bokey you speak of?

I think they got better, not neccesarily because of the trade for wesley but because the other moves and the time needed to gel together.

Wesley does have good D, but his shooting has been horrendous so far this season.

TMac started to play at higher level and the team began to have more chemistry around or after that trade, and all these helped ROX to win more games. The trade itself is bad, at least not good.

We need Wesley to start hitting his shots. I don't know how many wide open looks he has missed this season.

I was somewhat happy with/supportive of the trade, I think we f'd ourselves - BIG TIME.

Why is somebody as good as JJ traded all the time?

Boki's point totals on one of the worst teams in the league for the last 11 games :

    2,7,3,1,12,1,5,7,0,7,2

Yes, his career high of 14 points is still intact - he's tied it once since leaving the Rockets.

So.... should we take bets as to when he'll break it? :)

On one hand our record since the trade has been very good and Wesley has done a good job on defense but on the other hand he has done a horrible job shooting the ball. He misses more wide open 3 pointers than JJ and Boki combined. I would still rather see JJ here but as long as the Rockets keep on winning it doesnt matter (of course it would be nice if Wesley's shooting came around).

Good post, sums it up. As long as we win, that is all that matters. But Wesley needs to start shooting the ball better, he is missing way too many open looks.

JJ showed he could fit in... turning the ball over.

    That's why he was traded...

    Wesley - Career - 2.02
    Wesley - 2004/2005 - 1.58

    Jackson - Career - 2.59
    Jackson - 2004/2005 - 2.305

On the other hand, shooting 0-nth is turning the ball over too, right?
