Like Richard Justice's halfway-point report card on the Astros said....this team has not performed the way we would have liked them to during the first half, but imagine how much poorer their record would be and how much further down the standings they would be without Mike Lamb. Astros fans have always liked hard-nosed lunchpail ballplayers, of which Craig Biggio is the epitome. To me, Mike Lamb fits right into that category as well. He can play first, third, or right field. He is a rare good-hitting left handed hitter on a team dominated by right handed hitters (and I have always said that MMP is great for LH hitters because they can spray the ball everywhere). He plays hard and is low key. Mike Lamb has earned my respect. Mr. Pupura, please do not include him in any trading deadline deals you make over the next few weeks.
But if he's put at third or in right field, you are in deep crap. I like Lamb's bat and I think he should be the starting 1st baseman. But the man might be the worst infielder in MLB. (Except when Dunn tries to play 1st.) He's not the worst in right, but there are definitely better options.
Mike Lamb is a great hitter but a bad defender. Errors last two games have costed the Astros big time. The dude can flat out hit though. 2nd best hitter on Astros behind Berkman.
I agree. The guy was a total cast-off/bench player before, but he's really found a home in Houston. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite Astros players. Bwa ha ha!! Oh, man. I'm laughing so hard, I'm crying. *hiccup* Oh, great, you gave me the hiccups, too. Damn, that was a good one. Timmy the Hutt making a trade... *snicker* *hiccup*
I won't stand for that. So, I'll sit down instead. By the way - saw Charles McCall playing with Pete Mayes on Saturday.
Mike Lamb reminds me a lot of Billy Spiers. That guy was a total badass. He could play just about every position, rarely struck out, and always came through in the clutch.
You know I'm just funnin' witchyas. I heard Pete was playing down in your area over the weekend. Who was playing drums?
I think Pete said the guy's name was Daniel or Daniels. Milton Hopkins was playing guitar. They were playing at a little place in Baytown called Stevo's Down on Main Street. That place apparently books blues bands for Saturday night. Last week they had Pete, and the week before they had Texas Johnny Brown. I agree with you on Lamb. I woild hate to see him go.
Lamb is becoming one of my favorite Stros as well . His defense is a bit on the bad side but his bat more than makes up for it IMO .
I appreciate the love for mike lamb, but utility players are expendable. there's a reason why they are utility players, they do a lot of things okay, but not enough things very well.
Lamb's been solid for the bat and I give him props for that; but his sloppy defense has cost the team this past week. The only position I trust him to play is 1st base, and I'd rather have Berkman there.
I'd try to package Lamb in a deal to an American league team where he could DH. Maybe the Astros could get an outfielder with a bat. Put Berkman back at first.
That's exactly what I've been thinking...Lamb is a great addition to this team, but he's a bat without a position. If there was a way to get as good a bat (whose a corner player) in return I'd definitely consider doing it. And this is something I heard mentioned on I think Baseball Tonight as well; they were pointing to packaging either Ensberg or Lamb in a deal.
I'd hate to see Lamb go because he appears to be a well liked teammate, but he is starting to remind me of Cliff Johnson from the 70's. I still remember the experiment of Johnson at catcher because they wanted his bat in the lineup and 1st base wasn't an option because Bob Watson was entrenched there.
