Reed Sheppard is wasting his time in this Ime no clue offense, spot up SG, stand in the corner 3 offense.

 

It's arguably the hardest game in the regular season. I'll give Udoka a pass but his analysis is whack.

 

I always laugh at this because it's like they're all-world and the greatest shooters in college and then come to the Rockets and after about 1-4 games in the summer league "he can't shoot!" It's like the Rockets break them in a week or something. I'm guessing it's sometimes the player not the coaches.

Although ... Garry Bird is over there shooting 50% on 6 attempts/game so far ...

 

Maybe Reed Sheppard needs to be sent down, just to play free, Play PG Full Time put up 20 shots and pass for 10 assists.

Get away from Ime Udoka slow, half court boring offense. So many wasted opportunities and shots wasted, not playing uptempo.

 

um Ime wants them to play fast but play good tough defense also, he can’t control them not making shots. You can bring in another coach and get the same bricks and still lose

 

I heard Udoka say, "we don't want Alphi or Steven Adams guarding good scorers"

Yet Sengun fans have the nerve to argue with me that Sengun is a, "good defender!"

 

Half court offense is good defense, because slowing the ball down keep the other team from having it and scoring. Coach wants to slow it down to keep the offense possessions down for the other team. Fewer possessions, lower score, good defense.

 

If only we had the right types of players for a true motion offense!!?!

Oh, wait......!

 

Kaos and playing fast and downhill is what this team needs. They can’t do it while FVV is the hub of your offense.

 

That's weird. If we aren't that talented and are shooting at such a low efficiency, how did we get to be a top 10 offensive team?

Not everyone can have a Chip Engelland, but coaching is only one part of the equation. The players also need to put in the work. Many players that improve their shot aren't coached by their team. They hire their own coaches to help them work on it.

What are we doing to these guys? This is crazy. Maybe our shooting coaches are double agents from other teams trying to sabotage our players?



On a serious note though, I think it's a shot quality problem. Maybe someone can look into this and confirm or show me I'm wrong, but I think other teams are able to get better shots for their shooters than we are. Jabari actually shot 46% last year on wide open 3s. Maybe we'd have a different perception of him as a shooter if we were able to generate more open 3s for him.

 

In terms of attempts, we're around middle of the pack in "wide-open" three pointers attempted. The NBA defines "wide open" as having the nearest defender at least 6 feet from the shooter on the shot attempt. This doesn't necessarily mean we take every wide open 3 available to us at that range, it just means we're middle of the pack in attempts of wide-open 3's. The problem is we currently have the second-worst percentage shooting them. We're around 32%. The NBA also has an "open" stat that says the nearest defender is 4-6 feet from the shooter. The Rockets are shooting 35% on those which puts them around 10-12 in the league.

 

I think @heypartner pointed out that a step back shot was often counted as wide open by the tracking device because the step back created wide separation from the defender. Yet a step back shot is considered to be one of the more difficult shots by commonsense. Not sure how much it affects the counting of the Rockets shots.

 

Reed had a more complex system in college. He’s confused with this and1 offense.

 

Nah, I don’t know this. For catch-n -shoot, I believe it is a measure of distance at point of receiving the pass. I have been told that it doesn’t matter how far behind the arc you. (Like, Eric Gordon is “wide open” bc he’s 4’ behind the line,,,haha)

I don’t know how they measure shots off the dribble. To me, it makes sense that it’s “nearest defender” at point of release, because I don’t see how SportsVu cameras (which provide this data) could accurately know point of gathering for the shot. However, like you suggest, I would hope they could recognize ISO situations, and chart all of those as “very tight”, independent of how well the dribbler can get separation, after being covered “very tight”.

think about the 2s this “nearest defender” stat also tracks.

 

Reed is playing off ball at SG, which is a mistake, play him at PG.
Reed needs more reps with Alperen Sengun pick and 3 point shot. Run plays for Reed. Reed needs 12 shots a Game.
